Family Has Incredible Bond With Orphaned Rhino

the daily dish More on PawNation: Awesome, Cute, Exotic, Relationship, Rhinos, The Dish

Forget about the elephant in the room, let's talk about the rhino! According to the Daily Mail U.K., Anne Whittall of Zimbabwe helped raise an orphaned baby rhino in her home, and now receives visits from the full-grown animal.

Whittall started caring for Jimmy, her unusual guest, after the baby rhino was found next to his dead mother. Poachers had shot the mom and left Jimmy to fend for himself in the wild. Fortunately, photographer David Hulme came across the frightened animal and saw Jimmy needed help.

Not knowing where to take a baby rhino, Hulme decided to visit one of the most welcoming people he knows, Mrs. Whittall. The woman and her family immediately offered to take Jimmy in and raise the orphan in their guest house.

From there, a friendship quickly grew. Whittall bottle-fed Jimmy six times a day and showered the lonely rhino baby with love.

Five years later, Jimmy hasn't forgotten the kindness Whittall showed when he needed it most. The fully grown and free rhino often stops by for visits at his adoptive mom's house.

"He likes to come into the lounge and socialize, and when he is feeling neglected, he squeaks with indignation and makes people jump," Rodger Whittall, Anne's husband, told the Daily Mail U.K.

Instead of knocking, Jimmy opts for sticking his head through the kitchen window to let the family know he is dropping by.

Jimmy has also learned from his human mom's caring ways. The sociable rhino has befriended many of the animals in the surrounding area, including several dogs, warthogs, two orphan cows and a buffalo.

Those who work at the guest house and the Whittalls' neighbors don't have any complaints about the animal visitor. Getting the chance to hand-feed a friendly rhino doesn't occur too often.

The rhino's visits to home are filled with smooches, snacks and long walks with the dogs. Although, the walks don't always go smoothly.

"Anne and the dogs walk ahead while Jimmy brings up the rear, shuffling along and losing ground as he goes. "Suddenly, he realizes he has been left behind and achieves zero to top gear in seconds," Rodger told the Daily Mail U.K.

"Rhinos are extremely short-sighted, and pounding down the road after Anne, Jimmy seldom picks her out until he is really close. There are often some near misses."

Just wonderful what she and her family have done to save all types of animals. I have the greatest respect for them. If only humans were as nice as animals

For the information of those of you who have so much 'wildlife experience' and who have referred to the Whittalls as dumb or stupid, Anne Whittall has raised hundreds of orphan wild animals and successfully rehabilitated the vast majority back to the bush, including lion, leopard, buffalo, zebra, kudu, eland, bushbuck, waterbuck, you name it....Anne and my mother saved hundreds, nay thousands of animals during the 91/92 drought alone. This is the real world, enjoy the glimpse. The Daily Mail article was written out of context - as if Jimmy is still a youngster - and so I forgive your clueless opinions, but maybe you should do some research before jumping to misinformed conclusions. Jimmy the rhino is all over the internet, I am the guy who found him back in 2007 - he is now a mature bull and left home ages ago. Read about him here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150416284633646.404886.613348645&type=3 Good day, David Hulme

agree with MWARE...stupidity at its best !!! wait until the cute baby rhino playfully steps on someone's femur or skull ...put the beast where it belongs: the jungle or a zoo.

great idea until this wild animal turns on you or your kids!!!!!! It will happen I have dealt with wild animals personally. My Ex-wife got stitches twice from one of my parrots hope you know the risk. I know your thinking he or she will never hurt us yes they will and it's not their fault. I have other animals that I won't go into detail and I carry a gun incase there is an issue. The only animal that is domesticated is the dog period!!!! Even dogs can bite or kill their owners
