Humpback Whales Put on Show in Ireland Harbor

The luck of the Irish plays out in many ways, including free animal entertainment. According to TODAY, humpback whales visit the waters surrounding Ireland every winter, and this year is especially active.
Local whale watchers from Ireland's harbors say it is rare to spot this number of humpbacks in one place. What is driving these marine mammals to the waters? The all-powerful force of food.
The whales are coming to the area to feast, using a special technique to wrangle their meals. The humpbacks swim toward the sea floor and then spiral back up to surface, expelling air from their blowholes. This trick helps the animals trap and confuse nearby fish, and also gives onlookers an amazing show.
While the fish bring the whales, the whales bring the tourists. An increasing number of travelers are visiting Ireland's coasts in the winter to get an up-close look at these beautiful creatures.
