According to National Geographic, a recent study states that a possible "immortal" jellyfish species that can age backwards, like Brad Pitt's character "Benjamin Button," is invading the oceans in swarms.

The jellyfish, Turritopsis, can transform from an adult back into a "newborn" — over and over again.

However, scientists say that this only happens in the case of an emergency.

Emergency measures include instances such as starvation or physical damage.

More often than not, these miracle jellyfish will reproduce, birth and die the same way most other creatures do, but when faced with crises, they will transform "all of [their] existing cells into a younger state."

When this transformation occurs, the jellyfish will turn into a cyst, then develop into a polyp colony and then into the first stage of its jellyfish life.

In addition, the jellyfish's cells transform completely during this process.

When it is in its polyp colony state, it can spawn hundreds of jellyfish that are nearly perfect copies of the original.

Scientist Shin Kubota thinks that for humans, the key is to understand this unique strand of biological immortality and ask what promises might the Turritopsis jellyfish hold for human medicine.

"Turritopsis application for human beings is the most wonderful dream of mankind," he told the New York Times. "Once we determine how the jellyfish rejuvenates itself, we should achieve very great things. My opinion is that we will evolve and become immortal ourselves."
