Who says Great Whites can't jump? According to the Daily Mail U.K., photographer Dana Allen snapped pictures of one of these sharks surging into the air in Cape Town, South Africa.
-
Capturing the airborne shark wasn't just the simple click of a button. Allen spent three days in the water with a group of other photographers, trying to lure these giants into the sky with a fake seal.
-
Eventually one of the hungry predators took the bait, jumping out of the water and trapping the rubber seal in his jaws.
-
"The strike, when it happens, takes just over a second — up and out and back into the water. If you flinch, you can miss it. We were getting ourselves settled, preparing for a long wait and then whoosh," Allen told Daily Mail U.K.
"In an instant, the four-meter Great White shark was up and out of the water, right in front of our eyes."
-
Allen was able to take a few shots in the second it took for the shark to jump up and then quickly disappear back into the water.
-
While the moment only lasted a mere second, the photographer says it seemed to go in slow motion and that watching the shark in mid-air is a moment he will never forget.
-
Allen was in Cape Town leading a wildlife photography workshop, part of which was to attempt to capture a shot of a jumping Great White.

The group scheduled three early-morning trips out into the shark-infested waters in hopes of getting the perfect shot. It wasn't until their final trip that the patient photographers finally got what they were looking for.

November 30 2012 at 10:06 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI work for a company that represents the high speed digital cameras used for Shark Week and other productions. These images are completely real. I've seen hours of slow motion footage we've captured of sharks breaching and attacking just like this. The most popular spot for this type of shark footage is off the Cape in South Africa. I'm told that the sharks appear to actually enjoy the activity -- it is a form of play. We recently helped National Geographic shoot slow motion of a Cheetah running at full bore. Animals at their physical finest are an amazing sight.

November 30 2012 at 10:07 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAll this mighty power, all this fierce energy, just for a rubber seal?
November 30 2012 at 4:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNo wonder it's so hard to convince the shark that you're not bleeding!

November 30 2012 at 4:53 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi agree that it was probably harmful to feed it a rubber seal....who thought that was a good idea? i mean, i know sharks end up consuming a BUNCH of waste products on accident, but isn't that harmful?? and there's a marked difference when you purposely throw out a rubber bait with the intention of the shark taking it below the surface. hopefully it spit it out but of course there's no proof of that.

November 30 2012 at 1:42 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyReally Dude you need to get a life, not an ideology. Just try and go with the flow, enjoy the ride. It's a lot better that way... and a lot more real...
So the sharks jet ski breaks down and he takes it to the mechanic.
November 29 2012 at 10:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe mechanic tells the shark he will take a look at it but it will take time.
So the shark heads out to Carvel then goes back to talk
to the mechanic.
The machanic looks up at the shark and say's "It look's like you blew a seal"
The shark wipes his mouth and said "no.NO it's only ice cream"
Da Dum Dum
I too saw this on "Shark Week". It's real, not photoshopped. The decoy seal however, did not survive. The shark desimated it.
