Dar, the brilliant chimpanzee who used sign language to communicate, unexpectedly died at the age of 36, according to the Daily Mail UK.

Dar was the second youngest member of a family of chimps at Central Washington University.

Sadly, Dar died of unknown causes on Saturday morning. An autopsy is planned in the coming days.

His full name was Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania.

Dar learned how to sign at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico.

Although his life was cut short, Dar definitely left a mark on the world.

"Dar signed throughout his life, teaching us about friendships between humans and nonhumans, and the minds of chimpanzees," said Dr. Mary Lee Jensvold, who directs the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute.

The average lifespan for chimpanzees is 40–45 years. They usually live much longer in captivity, however.

Cheetah the chimpanzee died last December at the age of 80. Cheetah was famous for starring in the "Tarzan" films.

Dar did not learn to sign at the air force base. He learned to sign in Reno Nevada with Tatu and Moja. Another story points out that he was the first chimp to learn sign language. Also not true, Washoe was the first chimp.
