the daily dish More on PawNation: Elephants, Exotic, Scary, The Dish

The honeymoon was over before it could even begin. According to the Daily Mail U.K., a newly engaged couple had their car overturned by an elephant during a safari.

The British couple went on a trip to South Africa’s Kruger National Park in hopes of getting up close to wild animals, but the pair wasn't planning on this.

An elephant approached a convoy of cars traveling through the park. The animal tried to attack the car in front of the couple's car first, before turning its attention to the vehicle of Chris Hare and Helen Jennings.

"When I came around the bend, the big guy was right in front of us. He walked towards us and I pulled off the road," Hare told the Daily Mail U.K. "The elephant appeared to walk past the car but then turned back, pushing a tusk against the passenger door and rolling the car. It was terrifying and I just thought: 'But it can’t be possible that this is happening.'"

Onlookers from the convoy said the animal calmly walked off after flipping the car. Hare and Jennings were both unharmed during the terrifying encounter.

Park rangers soon arrived on the scene. After finding blood on the car, the staff believes the animal may have a tooth abscess, causing it to act out. Rangers are trying to track the animal down in order to provide treatment.

Additional park rangers arrived at the scene by helicopter. The park hopes to find and treat the involved elephant soon, but until then they are warning visitors to take extra precautions and ensure nothing protrudes from their car.

While elephants may seem like gentle giants, staff at the park says the animals can become extremely dangerous if they feel threatened.

South Africa National Parks spokesman Reynold Thakhuli reminds tourists, "When you seen an animal approaching, do not panic, and try to move away as fast as you can."

He's lucky he didn't piss off the elephant and the elephant go on a rampage and kill everyone there. that's probably why he's getting in trouble.

Huh. it's almost like we shouldn't be encroaching on these environments for our own personal gain and amusement. Go figure.

so? they weren't at the zoo where the animals are well protected from obnoxious oglers, but were actually trespassers. now maybe the elephants overreacted, but we have to remember they still try to retain some of their dignity.

Elephants have good memories, for all you know he was probably traumatized from all the poaching that has been going on in Africa. It is said, elephants are social creatures and bond with their mate for life, couldn't it possibly that the elephant is getting even... Scientist has determined that animals are self-aware of their surrounding and etc.

Elephants more so than most others. We are alone in our class of brain. However we do share the earth with some other fairly intelligent things: Dolphins, Apes, orangutangs, elephants, etc. There was a documentary on the Discovery channel some years back about how abused elephants in some African nation were sneaking into villages at night (can you imagine?) and knocking on the doors of people's huts. When they would wake up to go see who it was, these abused and angry animals would grab you and...well, you weren't going to have a nice day. These are extremely sophisticated thinkers. And like all sophisticated thinkers, their psychology has a fragile element to it. If you abuse them, they eventually break, just like we do.

as the snake said to Cleopatra ...what are you complaining about? You knew I was a snake BEFORE I bit cha'". So they knew an elephant could make them "road pizza" when they opted for the joy ride in the first place. Shoulda had a better exit strategy

These 'wild' animal parks are a blessing to many of the creatures that reside as the parks are usually protected from poachers, reasonably well maintained, and sick or injured animals are usually cared for by some of the best people available.

Now should we be driving through and 'peeking' in on the private lives of the animals, the answer is YES. First is that we learn to respect creatures other than we, and second there is a fee that goes to the care of the animals.

It is unfortunate that 'things' happen, but that is life and the couple on their honeymoon will have a 'war' story to tell, laugh about, and brag about for decades to come..

To bad we don't lock up tourists in cages so animals can gawk at them for a change. Leave these animals alone and they won't bother you. At least the controllers this time realize the elephant has a problem and wants to help it instead of kill it.

When the tiger writes the history book the hunter will no longer be the hero.

Where do I start? The elephant obviously wasn't caged, and safaris like this tend to help in animal conservation efforts. Zoos are the harbingers of information about the animals, taking their habitats to the masses. Go eat a hamburger, and rejoice in the fact you are near the top of the food chain.

Cheers for the Elephant. The car to the elephant is seen as a creature embedding into his environment. He/she does not see a 'car with people'. The elephant is merely protecting its domain. Just feel lucky it didn't decide to step out the encroachment.....this is what happens when stupid humans want to get up close and personal to nature...

Actually, it should, considering that they are 'supposed' to have more intelligence than say, a big cat. I'm going to guess that this elephant is in musth.
