Who's ready for an omelet? According to the Daily Mail U.K., a farmer discovered one of his chickens has laid a 3-inch egg. This makes the poultry prize about 3 times larger than a normal chicken egg.
-
Simon Broomfield checked in on his chicken coop after hearing a commotion coming from the birds. The farmer soon came across the cause of the ruckus: a tennis ball-sized egg.
-
The egg weighed in at six ounces and is said to be the largest in the farm's 26 year history.
-
A Lohmann Brown hen named Doris is the suspected source of this surprising specimen. The farm's staff believes Doris is the source, because she has had trouble walking following the egg's discovery.
-
This egg won't be going to market with the others. Instead, the yolk of the egg will be blown out so the large shell can be preserved for display.
-
"Doris is 22 weeks old and when chickens are young they can often produce bigger eggs until they get the hang of it," the farm's owner, Richard Dickson, told the Daily Mail U.K.
-
Until the egg is blown out, it is being kept in a wine glass for safety, since Dickson figures he will not see an egg like this again.

All of the hens on Dickson's farm are fed seeds and grain. So far, Dorris is the only one to lay a giant egg.

November 16 2012 at 2:49 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is not newsworthy at all!! Anyone who has been around chickens has seen this. Hens lay small eggs early in their laying career and the eggs become progressively larger as they get older to where this type of egg is not uncommon. Many times these eggs will have thinner shells and very fragile yolks. We have seen hundreds of eggs this size from hens much smaller than what laid this egg!
November 16 2012 at 2:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWE had over 10,000 chickens at a time. You're right, this isn't unusual. Every time you moult the hens, you get eggs that are either tiny, double yolked or gigantic like this one. I've even seen eggs with a whole egg, shell and all, inside them, and a few triple yolked eggs.
November 26 2012 at 3:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI used to sell the odd shaped and extra small/large eggs to a club that makes decorated blown eggs. I got as much as $10 each for them, and this was over 20 years ago.
Was there an ostrich lurking around?
