Mice Trained to Sniff for Explosives Could Replace Security Dogs

Bomb-sniffing dogs could be out of work soon, thanks to a group of rodents that have been trained to detect explosives and drugs. According to the Daily Mail U.K., the Tamar Group has trained a group of mice to respond to the scent of contraband.

The Israeli security company, led by former Israeli special forces officers, strongly believes that their specially trained mice could be exactly what the homeland security market needs.

"Our system takes animals and turns them into biological sensors, using specially trained laboratory mice and measuring their reactions to outside stimuli," said Boaz Hayun, CEO of Tamar Group.

The system, called Bio-Explorer, uses conditioned mice hooked up to sensors to detect changes in their heart rate, breathing and other life-signs.

In addition, the Tamar group also specializes in the design of detonation systems for construction and quarrying.

Maybe the mice and rodents will actually sniff out drugs, as opposed to drug sniffing dogs that give false positives up to 60% of the time.
