Man-Made, Curly-Haired Selkirk Rex Cats Called 'Adorable Abominations'

spotlight on... More on PawNation: Breeding, Cats, Kittens, Sad, Selkirk Rex, The Dish, Weird

Selkirk Rex cats may have an adorable exterior, but animal lovers are starting to worry about what's on the inside. According to Science 2.0, researchers are looking into the Selkirk Rex to see if the company who created the breed, Big Kitten, is responsibly producing the felines.

Selkirk Rex cats began in 1987 when breeders took over an abandoned animal shelter. At the facility they found one of the cats had produced a kitten with a curly coat, the signature feature of the Selkirk Rex.

Instead of worrying about the mutation and the kitten's health, Big Kitten forced the animal to breed with a Persian. The cat produced a litter of half curly-haired and half normal-haired kittens.

Since Selkirk Rexs were so cute, Big Kitten continued to breed the animal, without checking in on the mutation's effect on the animals' health. After having continuing success with curly-haired cats, the company campaigned to create the Selkirk Rex breed.

25 years later, with Big Kitten making money by registering Selkirk Rex breeders, researchers are starting to investigate the breed's health.

The mutation has been named SADRE, or Selkirk Autosomal Dominant Rex. SADRE is capable of creating a curly coat, whether one copy of the mutation is present or two.

Big Kitten continues to assure cat enthusiasts that the animals are safe and healthy, but they have no evidence to support these claims.

The company's attention is more focused on making sure the Selkirk Rex brings in money. Unfortunately, there is no government oversight to ensure that Big Kitten is controlling their breeding.

For now, Big Kitten will continue to produce cute cats that may not be healthy, but are enticing to buyers looking for an unusual pet.

Actually, this whole thing is a piece of crap. I met Jeri Newman (the originator of the breed) and have bred Selkirks for many years. Anyone who believes this piece of crap would be willing to buy the bridge I have for sale. Lies, Lies and More Lies. Not a bit of it is true!

I have never read so much rubbish in my life and knowing Serina (Pictured) she is a respected Austrian Vet who has undertaken a lot of research into the breed. Who this 'Big Kitten' is I have no idea and that's someone (Me!) who's been in the breed for 7 years now. The curly coat gene is no different from a human having curly hair, its a naturally occurring gene. In fact, the breed is still outcrossed to Persian's and British Shorthair so this would make the breed stronger rather than weaker. Its a shame journalists have to rely on sensationalism to make people read their poorly thought through diatribes.

25 years later all they can say is they dont know about the health of the cat breed. FFS!!! The typical lifespan of a feline means several generations have passed since inception. Did any of them turn green and melt in front of their owners? Any of them yak up a living furball then croak? Any of them die mysteriously? Has more than one of them suffered any genetic maladies that can be traced back to the 'forcing' of two different varieties of cat to mate? They been doing that, as have differing dog breeds since before they grew legs, walked out of the ocean and started boinking each other on dry land..

Oh I think he/she is pretty cute! Reminds me of my younger days when I had lots and lots of wavy hair. I scared my Dad one morning when I couldn't sleep and got up early to put the coffee on. Well, he had the same idea and when we ran into each other he literally screamed because it looked like I was wearing a fright wig. I miss my Dad very much but I would buy on of these "lamb chops' cat in a heartbeat--if only to remind me of Dad,
