Scientists Stunned By Cockatoo, Figaro, Who Makes His Own Tools To Get Food

the daily dish More on PawNation: Awesome, Birds, Cockatoos, Psychology, Talented, Weird

This is one talented bird! According to the Daily Mail U.K., scientists have discovered a clever cockatoo that can make his own tools to get food.

Scientists were shocked when they witnessed Figaro, a Goffin's cockatoo, create a rake out of beams and sticks. He is the first identified cockatoo of his entire parrot family to do so, however, he may not be alone. Oxford University researcher Alex Kacelnik said, "There could be other species of parrot that are just as clever but haven't been tested."

It all began when Figaro was being observed as a part of a problem-solving study. Dr. Alive Auersperg of the University of Vienna saw Figaro playing with a stone. "At some point he inserted the pebble through the cage mesh, and it fell just outside his reach. After some unsuccessful attempts to reach it with his claw, he fetched a small stick and started fishing for his toy."

Auersperg and her team then placed a nut where the pebble was. Instead of grabbing a stick, Figaro bit a large splinter out of the beam and cut it the the right size and shape of a raking tool. "From that time on, Figaro was successful on obtaining the nut every single time we placed it there, nearly each time making new tools."

Professor Kacelnik detailed Figaro’s achievements in the journal "Current Biology," saying, "We know that these animals are very smart but we were still surprised he was capable of manufacturing a tool and we are studying him in greater detail."

Animals live outdoors, no grocery shops--how long would I last? Also, "man-the-toolmaker" started in on weapons and is still going strong there--what birds make weapons?

If he is so smart, why does he make new tools each time rather then using the old ones. lol

I'm not at all 'stunned' or surprised. My Umbrella cockatoo defeats me every day, especially with locks and so-callled bird-proof food and water bowls!

Less than ten feet from where I type is a three foot by four foot by six foot cage with a Goffin's cockatoo in it-- we have been together for over twenty years, and she has defeated various types of catches and locks, the latest being her discovery of how to pick the TSA lock so she can open the door and get out when she feels like it. Goffin's are smarter than most of the cockatoo family, just range threatened in the wild.

And why are these scientist stunned? do they really believe animals are stupid? in many ways animals are much smarter then man, and not as cruel. you will never find an animal experimenting on a human
