Divers Get Up Close To A Great White -- Without A Cage

"Jaws" was all smiles when two divers decided to get a closer look at the notorious predator. According to the Daily Mail U.K., after logging several hours of non-cage diving with Great Whites, the divers claimed the creatures aren't dangerous.

Underwater photographer Daniel Botelho believes his time near sharks, like the 18-foot-female pictured here, show that the animals are wrongly feared.

"The movie 'Jaws' created an over-reaction which led to sharks becoming misunderstood," Botelho told the Daily Mail U.K. "They are predators for sure, mostly attacking by ambush, but they are not man-killers. I've been in the water during 24 logged-hours diving out of the cage and no shark came to me thinking I was snack."

The camera-happy shark lover hopes his photos can show others that getting close to Great Whites isn't a death sentence, but a magical experience. Botelho's most recent shots were taken off the coast of a remote island in Mexico.

Through his trips underwater, Botelho has learned a few tricks that can help divers safely swim with sharks. The photographer says it is important to remain calm, keep eye contact with the animal and to always hold your ground.

So far these tactics have kept Botelho safe during his dives and have allowed him to take dozens of award-winning images. Shark supporters hope his work will help this threaten species' public image.

I notice that they appear to be carrying "bang sticks"..but I still think it is foolhardy. Gorgeous shark, by the way.

Great Whites are ambush hunters. They stay far beneath the surface, the dark grey on their backs keeping them hidden in the depths, looking for shadows on the surface against the sun that look like food. Seals, dolphins, tuna, penguins, etc... It's why surfers are often mistaken for seals and accidentally attacked. Then the Great White rushes to the surface and hits their targets like a Mack Truck, teeth first. The goal is to cause massive bleeding and then wait for the prey to weaken and die. That way they can eat the animal without the danger of it fighting back and injuring them in return. What we have learned is that Great Whites don't generally want to engage anything in the ocean that already knows it's coming. Making eye contact with a Great White, being in a position to make sure they don't assume you're their favorite meal, and letting it know you are aware of them makes swimming with them much less dangerous than previously thought.

only an idiot would think they are not dangerous...too many get attacked and did nothing to them to cause it....they are predators and not some non dangerous pet....sharks, gators, snakes, etc are not pets nor are they docile to humans, etc.....
