Custody Battle Over Obie the Obese Dachshund

Obie the obese Dachshund stunned the world when he was introduced on the Internet by foster mom Nora Vanatta. After acquiring over 60,000 fans on his Facebook page and appearing on the TODAY show, Obie is now in the middle of a custody battle.

According to Examiner, ODR, a no-kill Dachshund rescue organization, took over responsibility for the then-77-pound dog in August from his elderly guardians. Although the seniors loved their dog dearly, they were not fit to care for him any longer.

Jenell Rangan, who runs ODR, could not foster Obie after rescuing him. A foster guardian was found who provided a temporary home for dog. Nora Vanatta volunteered for the job after finding Obie on facebook.

After taking Obie home with her, Vanatta created a Facebook page for Obie called "Biggest Loser, Doxie Edition." Soon after, he garnered media attention from all over due to his large and unusual size. At this point, ODR became worried. Later, they accused Vanatta of turning Obie into a celebrity, attracting the wrong kind of attention. Rangan came out to say, "[Obie] is not a celebrity, just an obese Dachshund that needs care."

Vanatta, however, claims that Obie is in great hands. A former veterinary technician, Vanatta has helped Obie lose 10 pounds by putting him on a strict diet.

Whatever happens, we hope that Obie continues to receive the care he deserves and achieves his goal of attaining a healthy and happy weight.

Do we have anything else to put on the table when we're done arguing about the dog? How about the right of microbes to survive?

Seeing the condition of this beautiful dog broke my heart. Obie needs to stay with Nora and her other dogs. He's already lost 10 pounds and probably added another year to his life. With Nora's diet and the encouragement of the other household pets, he'll get the excerise he needs as well. I hope he gets to stay with Nora. He's already lost his original owners who loved him and the emotional upheaval won't help his health.

Once ODR released the dog to Nora they should have stayed out of any discussions. Seems like they are the publicity "hounds" to me.

What kind of worthless dbag rescue agency gets pissed off when an animal is well cared for and used to educate and inform other canine owners?

The entire goal for those of us who aren't moron's and work in and with rescue agencies is better education for owners. We WANT the public engaged. We WANT attention for the right reasons. We WANT careful, responsible owners to be the overwhelming norm in the dog lover community. Obie is a rescue workers dream come true. He's caught national interest and gained a following of folks who are genuinely engaged with his progress and how he is making it. This is a NO FREAKING BRAINER on the awesome scale.

I try very hard not to judge but there is no legit reason for the agency to be taking the dog back. They are in it for cash, attention or both. The agencies greed and piss poor choice is going to result in a heavy backlash that is ultimately going to hurt the animals that are supposed to be their priority. I think the head of ODR just got herself some walking papers.

First of all, Nora didn't put him on Facebook, someone else did. Second of all, Obie has lost 15 lbs in 2 months. Nora is doing a fantastic job with him. She has 2 other dogs that Obie loves. You need to re-write this story after reading the whole story from the beginning. **********GO TEAM OBIE************

Reading some of your comments above... many of you have not followed the story of Obie. Nobody is TRYING to make a celebrity out of this dog and the dog IS NOT GOING BACK to the original owners. There are many sites and articles and information on the sage of Obie. Before posting something, please get familiar with all facts before making statements that make no sense. Thanks.

JUST LOOK AT THAT FRUSTRATED MAN.. WHAT A PURE BRED ASS. BRINGING ANIMAL OBESITY AND A REAL LOVING THERAPEUTIC SOLUTION TO THAT DOG HAS DONE MORE FOR ANIMAL OBESITY AWARENESS THAN THAT PUTZ OF A MAN WILL EVER DO IN HIS LIFETIME. HE IS SO SELF RIGHTEOUS IT IS SICK.
