Some 11-year-olds play soccer, while others find well-preserved woolly mammoths. According to the U.K. Daily Mail, a young boy with an explorative streak discovered a nearly intact woolly mammoth in his Russian neighborhood.
-
The specimen the boy happened upon is the best one found in over a hundred years, experts say. The mammoth has flesh, bones, fur and layers of fat, making the remains ideal for research.
-
Scientists believe the new discovery is the right side of the mammoth's body. The male creature is estimated to have been 15 years old and weighed about 1,000 pounds at his time of its death over 30,000 years ago.
-
The boy who found the beast is Yevgeny Salinder, a resident of Taymyr in northern Russia. This area has seen several mammoth discoveries, but none this well-preserved.
-
The find is especially helpful to researchers because the animal's tusks, mouth and ribs are intact and clearly visible.
-
The prehistoric creature is now being called "Zhenya," nicknamed for the boy who made the find.
-
Zhenya is being called the best mammoth discovery since 1901 by professionals such as Alexei Tikhonov, a mammoth specialist with the Russian Academy of Sciences.
