New photos from SeaWorld in San Diego, Calif., have the park in troubled waters again. According to the U.K. Daily Mail, an unknown photographer has leaked photos of one of the park's whales with a severe injury that left the animal's jawbone exposed.
-
In the shots, the 11-year-old killer whale, named Nakai, is shown with a large gash on his chin. SeaWorld has issued a statement in response stating Nakai received the gruesome-looking mark as a result of coming in "contact with a portion of the pool environment."
-
Others online claim that the park is lying about the gash and that injury actually occurred during an altercation among several whales.
-
These claims suggest that Nakai was either bitten by one of the other animals or slammed up against the wall of the pool.
-
The fight is said to have occurred on Sept. 20 during one of the park's nighttime shows. Along with Nakai, the incident also involved killer whales Keet and Ike.
-
Tim Zimmermann, a reporter at the scene, described the incident to Daily Mail: "It’s not clear if there was an aggressor or instigator, or if they all suddenly went after each other. In response to the altercation, Nakai split to the back pool. The onstage trainers, not realizing how badly injured he was, continued the show with the other whales."
-
Allegedly, trainers at the park did not notice the severity of Nakai's injury until after the show in the late evening.
-
In response, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has filed a complaint against SeaWorld to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The complaint states that the park is housing imcompatiable whales together, which is in violation of the Animal Welfare Act.
-
A representative of PETA elaborated on the group's complaint stating, "SeaWorld parks have a long history of housing incompatible orcas from widely divergent groups together in enclosures—and the result has been stress, agitation, aggressive and bloody raking, serious injury, and death."

A spokesperson for SeaWorld responded that the park is dedicated to the humane treatment of the animals under their care, especially their mental and physical welfare. Nakai is now being treated with antibiotics and is said to be recovering nicely and socializing well with the other whales.

Why Wales? Sea World you have enough other animals they to keep us amused so why killer wales? Let them lose they don't need to be in captivity. They admit a sound that doesn't bounce back in the ocean. Plus you really don't know how to take care of the anyhow. YOU SHOULD LET THEM LOSE AND SHUT DOWN THAT ATTRACTION!
April 16 2013 at 1:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyyea turn all of the animals loose and then there will be more people out of jobs, but hey you huggers don't care about people living in homes with food to eat and clothes to wear, all you care about, what do you loosers care about anyway, hey lets stop cutting down the trees there you go another hundred thousand out of work. wake up!

Imagine if someone captured you, put you in a fenced-in ring for the rest of your life and made you do tricks for the amusement of others. Tilikum is a dangerous whale, probably made so by Seaworld whose only interest is profit. Wait till it happens again.
April 15 2013 at 4:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTo Velocity105 and all those who want to release the whales, they can't. These whales have been born in captivity or been in captivity so long that they would not be able to survive if released.

November 20 2012 at 2:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI believe we could learn just as much about these highly intelligent, majestic animals just by tracking them in "their own true" environment....
A whale in a pool? Really?...
When will all you people wake up? This is so wrong to keep these beautiful, majestic animals caged. They are being imprisoned to work for food while you pay the ransom and freedom never comes for them. My children will never step foot in one of these so called amusement parks. Look at their size and then the size of their pools. This is wrong, and everything around this is so against nature.

November 12 2012 at 2:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt almost looks like a bad scrape. Maybe its jaw drug on the platform wrong. The AZA has very high standards. And also Sea World is responsible for their mental health along with physical health. Orkas must stay active. The wound is also in water, always in water (duh, it's a porpoise). Think about what one of your scabs look like after you get out of the shower, it looks worse than it is. c:
