The Netherlands' Artis Zoo welcomed a beautiful baby Malayan tapir named Betong late last month. The adorable spotted animal had a successful birth and was standing on its feet within an hour of its arrival, according to ZooBorns.
-
Betong is part of an extremely endangered species, mainly threatened by deforestation for agriculture. That said, the zoo is thrilled by the breeding program's success. Artis Zoo is one of many zoos in Europe that is participating in this program in hopes of saving the rare and unique species.
-
After a week, Betong decided he was ready for the spotlight. He excited visitors by making his debut outside of his exhibit for the first time.
-
Although he is quite small, baby tapirs can grow up to be 5-7 feet long and weigh 550-710 pounds. Looks like Betong has got a lot of growing to do.

Not only will Betong grow in size, but his coat will fade into adult coloration four to seven months after his birth. We think he's super adorable all tiny and spotted right now.

September 25 2012 at 9:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's a species of tapir, very endangered. Babies are spotted (just like a fawn) so they blend in with the ground cover and shadows, and are harder for predators to spot. They'll lose the baby fur and grow in an adult coat, which is a greyish white in the middle, and darker greyish black on the front legs/head and back legs/tail area.
