Help Your Dog Live Years Longer

More on PawNation: Dogs, Health

In the first lifelong canine diet-restriction study, researchers discovered that Labrador retrievers fed 25% less food than their siblings in a control group had a median life span of nearly 2 years longer. The conclusion among participating scientists: less food in the bowl adds more--and healthier--years to dogs' lives.

Researchers at the Purina Pet Institute in St. Louis, in collaboration with scientists from several major universities, published results of this 14-year study that shows that a dog's median life span can potentially be extended by 15% when the dog is kept to its ideal body condition by carefully monitoring food intake.

"We all know that obesity, whether human or canine, is bad for health," says Dennis F. Lawler, DVM, a veterinary scientist who, along with principal investigator Richard D. Kealy, PhD, directed the Purina Lifespan study. "What's exciting about this study is that, for the first time, we have shown scientifically that by simply feeding to maintain the ideal body condition throughout a dog's life, we can increase length of life while delaying the visible signs of aging. That's powerful stuff."

Pet expert Arden Moore is the award-winning author of The Kitten Owner's Manual and Real Food for Dogs (both Storey Books, 2001) and a graduate of The Humane Society of the United States's "Pets for Life" national companion-animal training program. To keep your dog fit and healthy, follow her ten food bowl tips.

    Tip 1:

Ask your veterinarian if your dog's body condition is ideal. If not, work with your vet to set up a weight loss plan to return him to that goal condition.

    Tip 2:

Read the food label for recommended daily portions based on your dog's weight, and look at the package back for an illustration of a dog at ideal body condition to see if your dog matches up. It's more important to feed your dog to his ideal body condition than to a certain weight.

    Tip 3:

Feed the dog, not the bowl. Use a measuring cup when scooping the dry food into the food bowl so you know exactly how much you are serving. Get a smaller bowl if you think it looks too empty.

    Tip 4:

Perform a weekly check on your dog to make sure you can easily feel his ribs. Examine his profile to see if his abdomen is tucked behind the rib cage, and stand over him to see if he has a clearly defined waist behind the ribs.

    Tip 5:

Adjust the amount you serve your dog to maintain ideal body condition. No matter what he weighs, if body condition is at the ideal point, the weight will be acceptable.

    Tip 6:

Team up sound nutrition with regular fitness to keep your aging dog in shape. M. Christine Zink, DVM, PhD, an expert in canine sports medicine, recommends that you follow these steps to maximize the health benefits of walking your dog.

    Tip 7:

Warm up your dog's muscles by starting with a 5-minute slow pace. Then take a 10- to 15-minute brisk walk, ending with a 5-minute slow pace to cool down the muscles.

    Tip 8:

Keep your dog on a brisk pace for the majority of the walk so that he trots rather than saunters. This gait exercises both sides of your dog's body and provides him with a cardiovascular workout.

    Tip 9:

Aim for 20-minute daily walks rather than hour-long walks on weekends. A little exercise every day is better than a lot of exercise once or twice a week.

Purina should be ashamed of themselves for claiming they want\ to help dogs to live longer - after the poor quality of their pet food they lie about. It is a federal law that all meat sent from a slaughter house to a pet food plant must be denatured so it does not get back into the human food chain. This means pouring kerosene over it, phenol, fuel oil, etc. These are carcinogens. And for good measure these now chemically contaminated meat pieces are coated with food coloring. Food coloring is derived from coal tar. Which is known to cause cancer. And dogs and cats fed this every day for years - no wonder so many of our pets are dying of cancer.

Then we have bacteria laden rendered meals. To their credit, Purina has in the past tried to avoid meat meal made from dogs and cats. Just where do you think all those bodies go of animals killed at animal shelters. Some brands of pet food (haven't checked Purina lately) have no meat at all, just by-products. Heads, beaks, feathers, etc. Do a google for "food pets die for" (with the quotes). Some enterprising businesses took some of the meat trimmings away from dog and started feeding it to humans (pink slime).

The best way to have your dog enjoy a long healthy life is to NOT feed it grocery store dog food. Make your own food for your dogs.

Just a thought... dogs and cats, and whatever else.... live just as long now as they did before. Things die. People die. Get over it.

This study by Purina is life changing for our pets. This study just proves what we knew intuitively, same as in humans. Keep your weight down and you will be much healthier and live longer. It will also save you lots of money on Veterinary bills!

I just had to "put down" by yellow lab of 12 years. It hurts so bad. I have been crying for well over a week now. I miss him so much.... he was so much a part of my life.... it is the same as losing a close "people" friend.... maybe more. He had cancer, was only diagnosed 2 months ago. He was not able to stand on his back legs and was in much pain. It happened fast. It was his time. So I say to all of you, enjoy each day with your friend.... I did with my dear, dear Ricky..... still I miss him so.. -Bill - Hollywood, Florida

My sincerest condolences, Bill. Do yourself a favor, go to a local shelter and adopt another angel just waiting to complete your life. It would be an honor to Ricky's memory. I have a yellow too, can't bear to think about the day he'll leave our lives.

My last dog lived to be 20 and I had to put him to sleep...I could not do it myself my daughter took him to the vet, I felt like I had killed one of my children...it took my 8 years till I could get myself to buy another dog...I now have a sweet little dog who is now 7 and I've had him sense he was 10 months...I leave dry dog food in a bowl 24-7 and they eat when ever they want I don't think you can do this with an adult dog I start this when I first get them, when they are little puppies. my dogs are never over weight. I never add all the other can doge food with the dry. They will eat when they get hungry.
