Yuan Zi (which means "chubby" in Chinese) sucks on an ice cube flavored with honey and apple in his enclosure at Beauval Zoo in Saint-Aignan, France.

A buffalo calf sticks close to its mother as they mill around the outskirts of a buffalo wallow at Blue Mounds State Park near Luverne, Minn.

Colchester Zoo's two blue-eyed black lemurs pose for a picture at a zoo in England. 

JUNGLE GEMS 

Three Bali mynah chicks were recently born at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo. These birds are one of the rarest species in the world. 

BLUE IGUANA 

A free-roaming adult male blue iguana stands royally in the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park on Grand Cayman. 

WOMBAT WONDERFUL 

The wombat is the world’s largest burrowing, herbivorous animal. However, during colder months they emerge during the day to warm themselves in the sun.

MEET KUDZIE  

Kudzie the Rueppell's griffon vulture peeks into the camera. What a cutie!

SWEET SMOOCHES 

Mama giraffe gives her baby Tamu a big wet kiss. So sweet. 

ELEPHANT SHREW SWEETIE 

Did you know that the short-eared elephant shrew is the fastest animal in the small-mammal house? Who knew such a cute and tiny creature could be so quick? This guy lives at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

BALD AND BEAUTIFUL 

Six tiny, hairless starlings get used to their surroundings at Zoo Praha.

Chester Zoo's tiger cubs are growing up so fast! Look how beautiful they've become.

MEET SQUEAKY 

Squeaky the 4-month-old koala was found whimpering in his mother's pouch after she was struck by a car on the Oxley Highway two weeks ago. Luckily, Squeaky was rescued and is slowly recovering at Port Macquarie Koala Hospital in Australia.

OINK OBSTACLES 

Four more days are left in Cincinnati Zoo's ZOOlympics. One of the events is pig hurdles. Look at this little hog clear those high hurdles!

SOMALI SWEETIE 

For the first time in the history of Zoo Miami, a critically endangered Somali wild ass was born. The foal and its mother, a 14-year-old named Lisha, were introduced to the public this week.

TINY TRUNK 

A baby Asian elephant named Anchali stands on her own in Berlin Zoo's elephant house. The tiny creature was born only a few days ago and already weighs 353 pounds. 

GOOSE PICKINGS 

Geese pick at the ground on a lovely summer day in Audenge, France.

LITTLE LEMUR

A keeper at the Duke Lemur Center holds a 2-day-old mouse lemur infant. A total of 20 infants were born during breeding season. 

TIGER TWINS 

Two tiger cubs from Columbus Zoo and Aquarium take a nap before they meet their visitors at the Zoo's Conservation Education Building. 

SMOOTH OPERATORS 

A smooth dogfish shark sticks its head up out of the water at the Indianapolis Zoo. They do this when they are either excited or scared. We're thinking it's the former, since this is Shark Week.

HEY THERE, WORLD 

A Florida chicken turtle greets the world while hatching at the Tennessee Aquarium. 

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

A baby elephant and his dad stand next to one another at the Dublin Zoo, showcasing where the little one got his good looks from.

BABY TRIPLETS 

Pippa the meerkat recently gave birth to triplets. At first, Pippa kept the pups mainly in the burrow. Now they are out and about, playing with the meerkat mob at Suricata Sands.

SNOW-LEOPARD STORM 

Two snow-leopard cubs born at the Akron Zoo in May just made their first public appearance. The cubs will get to explore their enclosure for the first time under the watchful eye of their mother, Shanti. 

PRECIOUS POISON 

Colchester Zoo in Essex, England is proud to have bred three batches of frogspawn from their yellow-and-black poison dart frogs. Amazing!

BEAR BATH 

Splish splash, this bear at Detroit Zoo was taking a bath!

SHOUT OUT LOUD 

Two penguins in their enclosure at the Troja Zoo in Prague engage in a shouting match. Do you think they were fighting over the last piece of fish? 

BEST FRIENDS 

Yao Ming, Wild Aid Ambassador and former professional basketball player poses with northern white rhinos at Ol-Pejetta Conservancy in Nanyuki. Yao is in Kenya to film a feature-length documentary called "The End of the Wild," to experience the beauty and economic importance of wildlife tourism and to learn how this is threatened by the current elephant and rhino poaching crisis.

SPOTTED DEER

The Philippine spotted deer is an endangered species, but thanks to a successful field program in which Chester Zoo in Cheshire, England, has been involved for almost 20 years, their future is much brighter than it once was.

PANDA PARTY 

Yang Guang the panda enjoys a delicious bunch of bamboo to celebrate his birthday at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland.

Tennessee Aquarium's three new gentoo penguin chicks gather round to give you something to "aww" about.

MANATEE MOMMY 

A female manatee patient named Joannie, rescued Jan. 31 with cold stress, gave birth in July to a full-term male calf at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo's Manatee Hospital. The birth marks only the fourth in the hospital’s history. The baby manatee was named Lad. Too cute! 

OLD FRIENDS 

Negrito the dog wears his straw hat and stands in the streets of Old Havana, Cuba, with a white mouse on his back.

BREAK FREE 

13-year-old chimpanzee C.J. escaped an enclosure and ran off into a Las Vegas neighborhood for the second time in about four weeks. C.J.'s caretaker says she thinks someone let the 180-pound animal out of the cage. The chimp was captured quickly and was never a threat to neighbors.

DARLING DIBBLER 

A tiny dibbler looks around its enclosure to see what's going on at Perth Zoo in Australia. This zoo breeds dibblers for release into the wild to help rebuild their populations.

HAPPY HYENA 

Female hyena Jubari is well settled in her new home at Zoo Praha in Prague. She looks pretty happy, doesn't she? 

ELEPHANT MASSAGE 

On a hot day at Amoseli Trust for Elephants, Anywyn the elephant gives his friend Anaghared a nice little stomach massage. That's what friends are for.

GATOR TAXI 

A turtle rides on an alligator's back at the Summit Garden Zoo in Panama City. It's nice when you can rely on a friend to get you somewhere fast.

AMAZON RIVER TURTLES 

A baby boom has struck the Tennessee Aquarium. They've hatched seven red-headed Amazon River turtles this year. Impressive!
