I think some breeds of dogs should be banned in the US.

My friend loves pits and always has a Pit Bull. However, when visitors come, he's in a room, with a closed door. Doesn't mean she doesn't love him, just means she doesn't want to take a chance. She says, he's a nervous dog. She also means, he's not comfortable around people and she the wiser for taking the precautions.

tiger, I'm actually in agreement that it's more the genetics than the owner. And, a more recent genetic evolution, breeding fiercer dogs, so no argument there.

To Jayme. I can't seem to reply on the reply section, so here goes. No, I don't know the statistic you're quoting, that Goldens bite more than Pits. You reply to me was somewhat insulting, so maybe I'll go again with: It's not the breed, it's the owner. Maybe Golden owners are nicer than Pit Bull owners. There must be a reason they chose to ban the dog in France and some other countries. It wasn't as though they arbitrarily decided to ban Pit Bulls because they didn't like the way they looked. They had statistics to back up their position. Please send me a link to your statistic of Goldens biting more than Pits.

I used to HYPE about pit bulls until I got one of my own. I now own 5 and they are as precious to me as are my own children. I grew up with my father raising hunting dogs and guard dogs. I also had a couple of different breeds in my early adult life. But the ones that I have become the closest to are my pitties. They are very loving, loyal, and very human in they way they express themselves. They wear their hearts on their sleeves as it were. Mine have grown up with my children and I never had a problem with them being alone with them. But then again my dogs are well trained and my children were taught to respect the breed very early. So it is by human error that they have become the way that they have not through any fault of their own. Shame on the people whose abuse their loyal pets in such a manner. Instead of the animal being put to death for acting on its owners wishes. Maybe they would think twice if the animal were put in jail and got counseling and they were put to death. Kind of like arming deer and bears against hunters!

Could someone explain to me why a dogfighter might have 20 -200 dogs on his yard and it is estimated that as many as 40,000 people are involved in the US in organized dog fighting !!!My question is Why it is never attacks on these yards ?People getting these dogs from any and everywhere not knowing the background of these mutts I know an lady that had a pit bull and it had pups and the sire of the pups was a chow, so she took the pups and gave the ones that looked like the chow away but she sold the ones that looked like pit bulls now I have never seen a nice chow and this lady just flooded the streets gamedogswith these manbiters to people that think they have pit bulls and they have mutts gamedogs and pit bulls are not the same Dont believe the hype.. If you must have a dog around your love ones dont trust a pit bull because you will never know the background get a gamedog Michael Vick had gamedogs he knew the background on his dogs, and I think all but 4 got adopted out If it's not ADBA registered Don't trust it!!!

@ ggena only 2 percent of dog bites are from pittbulls and u know what the number one dog is for biting people is golden retrievers so before u open your mouth and sound dumb u should do your research honey!

lol...You are so CORRECT! I have a Golden Retriever and a Pit Bull mix, and I often tell people that my Golden is more likely to bite them, than my Pit!

AGREE! i have a pit mix and a full pit and they are the most sweet, loving dogs ever. people who believe they are bad dogs are people who are ignorant and nieve and choose to believe what they hear in the media or on the internet. If people did their research, they would know pits were the original nanny dog bc they are great with kids. Your very more likely to be bit by a very small dog but no one takes them serious bc they are so small. it is definitely the owner not the breed. even some of Vicks dog that were highly abused are now in great homes and i believe one is a therapy dog. I cant stand people who hate on pits.

"PIT BULL" is not a breed. It is a term used for a vicious dog ready for the fighting pit. Ignorance is intolerable. I have heard of attacks by almost any and every breed. most breeds are miss labeled especially by unlicensed backyard breeders who do not know what they are doing and don't know bloodlines. They over breed diseases, genetic, and personality problems. The problem is animals are not cherished such as a beautiful rare Gem. because we have so many they are disposable. The authorities should heavily fine and and pursue unlicensed breeders. This would cure many problems. within a short period of time. 1 )supply and demand-people would have to pay for an animal that was bred by informed licensed breeders so overpopulation would end. 2) the animals would be tracked for health and dispositions issues there fore undesirable traits could be diminished.. 3) If someone has to pay for an animal they are more likely to take an active interest in the training and health of the animal it is then also an investment. 4) It is against the law in most places to not spay and neuter your animals. there are too many animals out there in shelters and being destroyed everyday. most are cross breeds (mutts) and they should have never been born. 5) If a dog/cat from birth is taught kindness and the time is invested to socialized to make sure it is tempered there would be less attacks. 6) People turn animals out to the streets to fend for themselves this brings out more survival instincts. If the shelters were not overpopulated we would not have to put any animal in that situation, and all shelter would be no kill re-homing centers to evaluate who should be an animals next owner if this is needed.. When there are too many animals people devalue them as a whole and loss compassion for each as individual treasures that they are, people would not let them run the street because they couldn't just run get another one. We as humans are the caretakers of the animals that we have domesticated and we are not doing a very good job of being responsible. Compassion seems like a foreign word for younger generations, did we forget how to instill that emotion in to the young people to pass on ? All animals and humans have survival instincts and It doesn't matter your color, size, fur, feathers ,scales, or skin, each life is precious and deserves to exist. We need to enforce laws to reduce unwanted pets and harsher penalty's for abusers and uncontrolled inhumane breeding and treatment of all animals. We made the monsters in any breed now we need to take irresponsibility.
oh and Stop calling any terrier/boxer/bull/dog "PIT BULL" unless your a dog fighter and your bragging about the aggressive disposition of your animal.
a label is a bad thing- If your neighbor called it's St. Bernard "Cujo" would you want your kid to run up and hug it?

Actually Pit Bull IS a breed when capitalized.
The American Pit Bull Terrier is a recognized breed by the UKC. I do understand that some idiots a re registering their 'American bullies' under the APBT name and bringing them into the gene pool...but a true APBT is a lean 40-60 pound dog with short fur, a square head, and powerful forequarters.
The American Staffordshire Terrier is an offshoot of the ABPT because the AKC wouldn't register them because of their reputation. The APBT is bred to be 'game'...and this doesn't mean 'fighting'...this means being ready to do a job and having a lot of enthusiasm about it. They will do their job as hard as they can.
The AmStaff is bred for showing and looks and doesn't have the same 'game' attitude of its cousin.

Now, when people use terms like 'red nose' and 'blue nose' or write the name like pitbull or pittbull, I know they know absolutely nothing about the breed. They just want a 'generic pit bull type dog' who looks tough and gives them some kind of street cred. These are the same idiots breeding genetically and temperamentally unstable dogs. Every online ad I see about their 'bully style' whatever nose pittbulls makes me want to scream. They are destroying a once proud breed. A breed once used to represent America. OUR breed.
