Nice article and pictures, of a variety of mainly mixed or non-APBT/AST/SBT dogs people call 'pit bulls'. Ours is among them, a Dogo Argentino mix (like the all white dog in one of the pictures) but people call her a 'pit bull' and we've no objection, all of us 'looks like a pit bull' owners are in the same boat and we gain nothing by trying to say 'oh my dog's not one of those!', IMO. But ours anyway fits the *accurate* typical profile: she tends toward aggression with most other animals and that requires careful management. She's totally benign to people in any circumstance I've seen over several years. And she lives to be the 'family dog'. It's like she has a clipboard with a schedule, the way she'll rotate whose lap she plops down in (at 55lbs) or who she'll bring a toy to for play, so no one is ever neglected. And she's a really funny goof ball at home. We love her more than words can say. And all it took was giving her a break and taking her from the shelter.

I live in the UK and see these 'pit bull' type animals frequently. I admit I use the term with little knowledge. I bring it up because in my neck of the woods they're seen as a 'hard' type of dog. The hard lads want to portray a certain 'don't mess' image and this dog type helps. I've never seen a female walking this type of dog. I know they exist, of course. I really feel for the genuine lovers of the breed as in reality, around here, they are frowned upon in a big way.

It is the owner, not the dog. It makes sense that this type of dog has the reputation it does because if it's the owner, it all makes sense. If you are a genuine lover of the breed and don't need the 'I'm hard' image then you suffer because of insecure idiots. Perhaps there should be some kind of ownership requirement? What do you all think of this, please?

I'm living in the UK and have seen many types of 'pit bull' dogs on the streets. Please be aware that I admit fully to use the term 'pit bull' with little knowledge. What I do have some idea on is the type of person (around here) that purchases these animals. 'Pit bulls' are seen as a 'hard' dog and the 'hard' lads want to be seen with them. Not once have I ever seen a female walking with one, ever. I'm simply passing comment that it's an image thing in my neck of the woods. That's a very sad thing indeed and I've got to say that I feel for the owners of these types of animals that are true lovers of the breed. I know that none live around here, it's all for show, nothing more...

I think some breeds of dogs should be banned in the US.

If you feel that Pit Bulls should be banned, then maybe you should ban all the little dogs that have been rated with higher rates of attack then pit bulls. Yes, Pit bulls are used as fighting dogs and have killed people, but that isn't the dogs fault. That is the fault of the owner who shouldn't have had the dog in the first place because they didn't know how to take care of it. Little dogs, they are just aggressive and yappy and attack you if you look at it wrong. Just because they are small doesn't mean they are safe!

My friend loves pits and always has a Pit Bull. However, when visitors come, he's in a room, with a closed door. Doesn't mean she doesn't love him, just means she doesn't want to take a chance. She says, he's a nervous dog. She also means, he's not comfortable around people and she the wiser for taking the precautions.

tiger, I'm actually in agreement that it's more the genetics than the owner. And, a more recent genetic evolution, breeding fiercer dogs, so no argument there.

To Jayme. I can't seem to reply on the reply section, so here goes. No, I don't know the statistic you're quoting, that Goldens bite more than Pits. You reply to me was somewhat insulting, so maybe I'll go again with: It's not the breed, it's the owner. Maybe Golden owners are nicer than Pit Bull owners. There must be a reason they chose to ban the dog in France and some other countries. It wasn't as though they arbitrarily decided to ban Pit Bulls because they didn't like the way they looked. They had statistics to back up their position. Please send me a link to your statistic of Goldens biting more than Pits.

I used to HYPE about pit bulls until I got one of my own. I now own 5 and they are as precious to me as are my own children. I grew up with my father raising hunting dogs and guard dogs. I also had a couple of different breeds in my early adult life. But the ones that I have become the closest to are my pitties. They are very loving, loyal, and very human in they way they express themselves. They wear their hearts on their sleeves as it were. Mine have grown up with my children and I never had a problem with them being alone with them. But then again my dogs are well trained and my children were taught to respect the breed very early. So it is by human error that they have become the way that they have not through any fault of their own. Shame on the people whose abuse their loyal pets in such a manner. Instead of the animal being put to death for acting on its owners wishes. Maybe they would think twice if the animal were put in jail and got counseling and they were put to death. Kind of like arming deer and bears against hunters!
