Are Guard Llamas the Ultimate Crime Fighters?

Times are tough these days, and when the going gets tough, that means everyone has to chip in to help out, even farm animals. According to the (U.K.) Guardian, farmers are turning to their llama friends instead of scarecrows and shotguns to protect their land.

In 2011, a survey reported a 6-percent rise in farm crime. Tractor theft decreased, but the cost of livestock rustling increased by 170 percent. However, the same survey also showed that farmers were using less traditional ways to stop robbery on their property. This included everything from using geese as watchdogs and, of course, enlisting llamas to protect the livestock.

On YouTube, you can find videos of llamas chasing people off of farms. While llamas may instill fear in hopeful thieves, according to Liz Butler of the British Llama Society, llamas can't do much more than that.

"We do sell a number of llamas as 'guard llamas,' and they do protect livestock, not from human beings but from predators such as dogs and foxes," said Butler.

While llamas are great for preventative measures, farmers still believe that neighborhood watch is the best way to combat crime.
