PERFECT MUD POOL

A pig splashes around the "best mud pool" in the Netherlands. This particular mud pool was chosen by Dutch animal-welfare organization Wakker Dier because of its size, depth and muddiness. 

TIGER CUB CUTIES 

The Peoria Zoo in Peoria, Ill. welcomes its first tiger cubs in more than 30 years. Too precious. 

SEA ROCK STARS

Singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow makes a new friend in Steime, a 22-year-old bottlenose dolphin, at SeaWorld San Diego. 

CAPUCHIN CUTIE 

Smokey the capuchin monkey grabs tightly onto his teddy bear as people tour his new exhibit at Jungle Island in Miami. 

HERA THE HAWK 

Hera the hawk hangs out with handler Andrew Watson at the London 2012 Olympics at the Olympic Park.

Rescuers at the Jakarta Animal Aid Network try to free a sperm whale stuck in shallow waters at Pakis Jaya beach in Karawang, West Java. 

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANOUSHKA

Anoushka the Amur tiger celebrated her eighth birthday this week. Judging by her cake, Anoushka must not have a big sweet tooth. 

LOVE LICKS 

A hyena gives her baby a big kiss on the back of her head. Colchester Zoo recently welcomed this new and adorable hyena pup into their family.

SPECIAL DELIVERY 

The Cheetah Conservation Station received a special delivery today. A dama gazelle (a critically endangered species) was born to mom Adara and dad Raul on exhibit. A few zoo visitors were lucky to see the young gazelle’s birth and first steps. 

SEA LION SUCCESS

Zookeeper Emily Smith bonds with Teva, a sea-lion pup that was born last month at the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee. It is the zoo's first successful sea-lion birth.

YAKKITY YAK

Zoo Sauvage in France welcomed a baby yak to their family last Saturday. 

TEENY TINY 

Four tiny rock hyraxes have been born for the first time ever at Chester Zoo. Despite their small size, these creatures are the closest living relatives to elephants. 

BABY STEPS 

Rocky the Gentoo penguin waddles around the Edinburgh Zoo. Rocky is one of seven Gentoo penguin chicks that hatched at the zoo this year.

Miss Clove, Oklahoma City Zoo's red-river hog, passes the afternoon with her paintbrush. 

RARE LION CUBS 

Four rare lion cubs were recently born at Paignton Zoo in England. The cubs had their routine first vaccinations at 9 weeks old and seem to be doing very well.

CUTE KITTWAKE

A recently hatched red-legged kittiwake sits pretty in its new enclosure at the Alaska SeaLife Center. 

GOLDEN LION TANG-ARINS

Nope, these baby golden lion tamarins did not fall into a pool of Tang. Their vibrant orange hair is au natural. Meet Robin and Theo, Zoo Atlanta's newest additions.

CHEETAH CUB LOOKOUT 

Two 3-month-old cheetah cubs make their public debut at the Smithsonian National Zoo. They have yet to be named, but the zoo plans to name them after the fastest American male and female athletes in the 100-meter dash of this summer's London Olympics.

KOBUK CUTIE

Kobuk was recently born at the Alaska SeaLife Center to two of their harbor seals, Atuun and Snapper. 

WITTLE WABBITS

A pair of 20-day-old pygmy rabbits greet the world at the Oregon Zoo's pygmy rabbit facility in Clackamas, Ore.

COOL DOWN 

An elephant is sprayed with water to cool off in the Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam, Netherlands. 

FOSTER KITTEN  

A pair of foster kittens look up to the camera as they play inside Lost Our Home Pet Foundation in Phoenix, Ariz. Lost Our Home helps people facing foreclosure place their pets with other families or in foster environments until their owners can take them back.

Australia’s perentie is the world’s second-largest lizard. Perth Zoo's perentie, pictured here, was born last year and still has a ways to go.

HOW DO THESE WORK?

Walking is difficult for this newborn giraffe named Dorle. She tries to figure out how her legs work as she attempts to stand in her enclosure at the zoo Friedrichsfelde in Berlin. 

TO RUSSIA, WITH LOVE 

Akita City Governor Norihisa Satake holds a female Akita pup named Yume, which will be given as a present to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda offered Putin the puppy as a gift during the G20 in Mexico in June.

MEET SQUIRRELLY 

An orphaned baby squirrel named Squirrelly is syringe-fed by Wildlife Assistant Sheelagh McAllister at the Scottish SPCA's National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross, Alloa, Scotland. The orphaned red squirrel is the 1,000th animal to be rescued, rehabilitated and released back into the wild by the Scottish SPCA this year.

Kigali, a baby gorilla at the Gulf Breeze Zoo in Gulf Breeze, Fla. watches onlookers from across a pond as he enjoys a birthday party held by zoo personnel to celebrate his sixth month.

If you're visiting Michigan anytime soon, watch out for cougars. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says it has verified the presence of cougars in Michigan at least 15 times in recent years.

Denmark's royal Daschund struts her stuff across Grasten Castle. This precious pup belongs to Prince Henrik.

SWEET SURPRISE

The arrival of a newborn cougar came as a surprise to zookeepers at Zoo Sauvage in Quebec, Canada. The confirmed birth of a new cub has keepers excited but cautious, so mother and cub have been separated from the other cougars on exhibit. 

PUDU PRECIOUS 

What an exciting day for Bristol Zoo Gardens in England! A male pudu recently was born at the zoo. This adorable creature is the world’s smallest species of deer.
