Naked Mole Rat Could Be Key to Aging and Cancer
the daily dish
The secrets to the possibility of fighting cancer and staying young could reside inside of a naked mole rat. According to Dr. Rochelle Buffenstein, her naked mole rats should live only to about 6 years of age, but instead they live up to 35 years and stay active until about 25. While most mice die from tumors, Dr. Buffenstein has never had one tumor in her colony of mole rats.
People share 178 unique gene families with mole rats. "Humans and naked mole rats live between four and five times as long as they should," added Buffenstein. Since we are fairly similar, researchers say the key is to find the pathways that make the rats age better and stay cancer-free, then find a way to modify human genes to do the same. Watch the video to learn more about these underground critters and how they could be the key to staying cancer-free.
