Bobcat Breaks Into Washington State Prison

Most folks wants to get out of prison, but one bobcat was looking to bust in. According to AP, prison guards at the Monroe Correction Complex in Washington startled a curious bobcat while patrolling the perimeter of the facility.

This animal's instincts must be a little different than that of a human, because the bobcat bolted through the razor-wire fence and into the prison yard, instead of running away from the jail. The complex's fence is built to prevent people from entering and exiting, but the agile animal was able to slip through with only a few scratches.

Once inside the yard, the bobcat climbed onto the roof of the special offenders unit and got comfortable. Prison officials called in a veterinarian, who carefully tranquilized the cat and took it to a local animal hospital.

The bobcat's walk on the wild side didn't leave the animal with many marks. The creature received several stitches to help heal the cuts from the fence and is expected to make a speedy recovery.

Currently, the bobcat is behind bars at a nearby wildlife center. The animal will be released back into the wild, once he is fully healed.

Prison officials say that they have spotted bears, raccoons and other bobcats in the rural area surrounding the corrections complex, but that this was their first break-in. The fact that an animal slipped into the facility doesn't make Department of Corrections spokesman Chad Lewis and the rest of the prison staff worry about potential human break-outs.

If we had an inmate the same size of a bobcat with the same level of dexterity, then we're concerned," Lewis told AP.
