A Dozen Cats Set To Be Adopted Killed By Shelter Computer Glitch
the daily dish
A dozen cats that had a second chance were tragically denied the opportunity due to a computer glitch. According to NBC New York, a malfunction in a new online system at New York's Animal Care and Control is leading to the euthanization of cats that have been requested for adoption.
The new system is a database that lists all the cats in the New York ACC network scheduled to be euthanized the next day. The revised list goes up each day at 5 p.m., giving rescuers until 6 a.m. the next morning to request a cat on death row. Once the request is put in, the selected cat is taken off the euthanization list so the adopter can pick up the requested pet.

This may sound like an easy way for animal lovers and rescue groups to prevent the euthanization of felines, but the system has not been working in the cats' favor. Unfortunately, several people have arrived at the ACC to claim the cat they requested, only to find that the animal has been put down. Workers at the shelter have told the distraught adopters that they never received their requests and that their cat was put down as scheduled.
While the shelter is claiming that the issue is user error, rescue groups and former ACC employees are saying an unsolved computer glitch is to blame.
Head of the Empty Cages Collective in Brooklyn, P.J. McKosky, told the New York Post that he believes these innocents animals are being used as guinea pigs to test a new system and that the ACC is carelessly playing with the animals' lives.

A former ACC employee has step forward and given information that supports McKosky's claims. The informer shared that she was told about glitches in the shelter's computer system and that she needed to keep quiet about them. This demand for secrecy and lack of concern for the felines led the woman to quit her job at the ACC.
The former employee told the Post, "There are lives counting on this to work properly. I had expected better for New York City's animals."

The NYCACC is run by the mayor of NYC, per the 1894 charter. The current mayor, Mike Bloomberg does not care about the shelter animals of NYC. He has made the statement that he "wants to get all the strays off the streets of New York". I'd rather see he, Julie Bank, the NYC Dept. of Health, the Board of Directors and anyone else promoting the killing of HEALTHY shelter animals get run out of town! Both Giuliani and Bloomberg had chances to open shelters in Queens and the Bronx and make the ACC no kill and they wouldn't!!! The "Hero" and "Nero" are both ZEROES!!!

July 17 2012 at 9:20 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat was a tragedy for one cat may well have been a stroke of luck for another.
It is some consolation to believe that all of the families concerned now have a cat in their home enjoying a happy and cared for existence.
It wasn't a computer glitch!!!!
July 17 2012 at 8:27 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIT'S ALWAYS DONE ON PURPOSE!
EVEN TRAPPING THEM IN THE PURPOSE TO BE KILLED!
THEN IGNORING ALL THE HARD JOB OF THE PEOPLE WHO WASTE TIME AND MONEY TO SAVE THEM...
IT'S A COMPLETE IGNORANCE AND NO FEAR OF ANY SUPERIOR INSTITUTION
The so called shelter but the slaughter hell hole, have URI outbreak for months now!!! so,
IT'S ALL DONE ON PURPOSE! NO OTHER INSTITUTION CAN STOP THIS ANIMAL HOLOCAUST
is it possible that in 2012 in US, to trap people's pets who jump fences and kill them????
Most people don't care about animals which is why I'll be thanking God when the world economy fails and WW III finally breaks out and end our miserable species. Humans are far too evil to "rule" this earth.
July 17 2012 at 2:18 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replythat's not right, its just wrong that you have to destroy an animal's life, just so they can save their own? I don't care if it was an error, they did that on purpose because they think it's their job. well why don't we put those same people in the cage and try to euthanize them and lets see how they like it. Let them think twice before trying this again.
July 17 2012 at 2:08 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think there needs to be no kill laws put in place. I'm from the west so there is more space for shelters but I think its time to move forward as a society.
