Sometimes it pays to be a tattletale. According to WGN-TV, neighbors' complaints about a strong and nauseating odor coming from a Berwyn, Ill. home led officials to investigate. What they found was a house covered in filth and filled with cats, animal feces and clutter.

Once authorities were aware of the situation, Animal Care and Control was called in to start removing animals from the home, which Police Cmdr. Michael Cimaglia told the Chicago Tribune is "uninhabitable." A large number of animals were somehow living there. Officials have already pulled over 60 cats, 3 dogs and 2 opossums from the residence since Monday. Those doing the work say that they expect to find at least a dozen more cats before the home is clear.

Due to the owner's hoarding behavior, it has been difficult to catch the pets by hand amongst the accumulation of stuff. It is also hard for authorities to be sure that they have removed all the animals, when there are so many places for them to hide. Rescuers have been dependent on trap cages to catch the skittish felines, and hope that the rest of the cat inhabitants will find their way into the cages set around the house over the next few days.

Luckily, all the animals found in the home are alive. After being captured, the pets are transported to an animal shelter in the nearby town of Cicero. Cicero Animal Welfare Department manager Michael McKee told the Chicago Tribune that the shelter's goal is to evaluate the medical condition of each animal and find homes for those healthy enough to be adopted.

Surrounding neighbors of the Berwyn home say that a married couple and their teenage daughter live in the residence. The mother is said to volunteer at animal shelters and have a true love for all creatures. While the neighbors are not angry towards the woman, they do believe it is unfair and unsafe to the animals and her family to live this way. No charges have been filed in this case.

Hey the important thing is getitng these poor animals taken care of. But a few words about the web title of this article'-- the word "amount" is coming into wrong use where the word "number" of should be. This is a "number" of cats not an "amount of cats""--and a funny grammatical error creeping into broader usage all the time:a·mount   /əˈmaʊnt/ Show Spelled[uh-mount] Show IPA
noun
1. the sum total of two or more quantities or sums; aggregate.
2. the sum of the principal and interest of a loan.
3. quantity; measure: a great amount of resistance.
4. the full effect, value, or significance.

As much as I love animals, and have a fascination with hoarder's, I really don't think that this much attention should be given to such a petty crime, we have bigger criminals to deal with like murderer's and child molester's. It is such a shame that the police had to take time out of their work schedule to deal with this when real criminal's are out there committing hideous crimes.

My boss once asked me what my ultimate goal in life was, I told him I wanted to be an old lady of 90 with purple hair and 40 cats.LOL, but seriously, no one needs that many cats no matter how wonderful they are.

I didn't see in the article the surprising job the hoarder had. Thanks for the bait and switch, AOL.

(yes I know it said she volunteered at an animal shelter, but that is neither a job nor was it surprising)

The house down the street from me was owned by a "cat lady." I never saw it then, having moved into the neighborhood after the house was remodeled. The workmen had to wear masks for the odor! Unfortunately the other neighbors say the house wasn't really repaired, just covered over (like the siding hides damage), so I am glad I didn't buy it! But, the new owner has uncovered at least 20 cat skeletons so far in his yard!

Hoarding is a mental illness. There are various kinds of hoarding, including animal hoarding. She was probably working at an animal shelter to support her hoarding addiction.
