Zoo Orangutan Forced to Quit Smoking

Even animals have their vices, and for Tori the orangutan, it's smoking. According to The (U.K.) Guardian, Tori picked up the habit 10 years ago, mimicking smoking visitors at the Taru Jurug Zoo in Indonesia.

Soon enough, Tori's copy-cat behavior became a full-blown habit. The animal was able to smoke from the cigarette butts that ended up in her enclosure. Now Tori has become so used to getting her nicotine fix that if she is denied a cigarette, she becomes angry and begins throwing things.

Zookeepers have tried for years to help Tori quit, attempting to lure her away with food when she finds a cigarette butt. After multiple failed attempts, the zoo has decided to take more drastic measures and move Tori and her mate to a different part of the park.

The orangutans' new home will be out of the reach of visitors' cigarette butts and will include ropes, large trees and an expansive view of the park. The Taru Jurug Zoo hopes that these new features will distract Tori from her cravings and force her to quit smoking for good.

Hardi Baktiantoro of the Centre for Orangutan Protection told The Guardian it is not uncommon for the orangutans of the Taru Jurug Zoo to get hooked on the habit. This is because they have access to cigarette butts, and because the animals have 97-percent genetic similarity to humans, they are more prone to adopting our behaviors.

Sadly, visitors to the zoo refuse to follow guidelines and warnings from zoo officials, and they continue to throw butts into the orangutan exhibit in order to get photos of Tori in action. The zoo has come under fire multiple times for their lack of control over the situation. They hope Tori's move will put an end to criticism and her smoking habit.

Smoking is a nasty habit, and I did it for 33 years before I was able to quit for good. I now have 9 years clean.......and I have never looked back. I can't even stand the smell of them anymore....they are nasty! She will go through withdrawal just like anybody else......but she will get over it too.....

I feel sorry for Tori as I am a smoker also. Maybe if the park designates smoking areas in the park other visitors will not be bothered by the smoke too. No nasty butts all over the park grounds to clean up. I wish Tori all the best in quitting.

I feel sorry for Tori as I am also a smoker and know how hard it is to quit. Maybe they should try not having visitors smoke in the park only in a designated areas and will also keep the park cleaner and litter free of the nasty butts and won't bother those who don't smoke either. Good Luck Tori. Will be wishing you well.

Good Luck, Tori!
It's gonna be a miserable time- - (probably for her fellow orangutan roommates there, too. I hope Tori doesn't throw things at them during her nicotine fits!!) - - but hopefully an unhealthy habit will be kicked and everyone will come out better in the end. Such a cute picture, otherwise. I love how Orang's feet look like hands! :)
