'Dogs in the City' Star Justin Silver Answers Canine Questions

dogs decoded More on PawNation: Celebs, Dogs, Training

Justin Silver Says: "What I usually do is grab a 30-foot leash for this, and I work on my come commands. I work on it outside and I start small. I start with a few feet and have the dog come with treats and toys that it likes.

I'll repeat the process. I'll have the dog come to me, have it sit and take a few steps back. Have it run to me, ask it to sit again and have it run to me, each time extending it further and further. Having a long leash is a really good way to do that.  Using a long training leash is really the way to go."

Q- I have a puppy who was shy, did shy dog class and is now a rock star BUT she will not pee outside. She was on a road trip with us recently for 12 hours ... We stopped constantly, but she never would go. We stopped on grass, we placed pee pads down, and she waited until we were in a hotel room to pee. What can we do?

Justin, first of all, I want you to know my family loves your show and we wish Dogs in the City would return to CBS!!! Good quality programing. We have just adopted our first family dog. He is an Airdale mix, very silly and he knows it. My son tries to remember some of the techniques from your show. We need to teach him manners. Any chance you would do an episode here in Flower Mound TX? We are looking at training schools and trying to pick the right one for us. We could sure use your help!! All the best Cheryl Hogan

Hi Justin, thanks for the wonderful information about dogs. I love your show. Here's my question, " my husband & I have a parting of the ways when it comes to choker chains for my pit mix dogs. They are smart & very active. I say no chains around their necks! What do you think?

Please Help! My son has an almost 9 month old pug. We got her when she was 5 1/2 months old. She will not be potty trained. I have tried everything I know and she just goes where ever and when ever she wants. She is crate trained and have used that mostly to train her. Use treats and praise when she does go outside, but she just doesn't seem inclined to hold it at all, both pee and poop. What can we do? Appreciate any tips

I have 2 pigs, one 8 and one 5. Pugs r really hard to house train and it took until they were over a year old. But once they are trained they do really good! Just have patience!
