7 Annoying Summer Pet Problems Solved

    #7: Sunburn

Just like the rest of us, pets can get sunburned, and as with humans, intermittent sun exposure can lead to skin cancer. Rather than trying to cover up their noses, ears, and bellies (the areas most prone to sunburn) with questionable sunscreen chemicals, just keep them inside during the hottest part of the day, and draw shades and curtains if they like to sit in sunny windows. If your pets are just too miserable without an afternoon romp in the yard, make sure you have plenty of shaded areas, suggests Green, and if your dog will allow it, put him in an old T-shirt to protect his belly.

Just love the idea of using everyday products to solve unusual problems and dogs can definitely product unusual problems.

Evie I live off Bourbon street in NOLA, where animals and humans use my steps my ground, for their P and POOP, so! you have no problem. I'L take yours, if you take mine. OK?

Try red paper flakes or used coffee grounds. We have had success with both of those. Check your local Starbucks, they sometimes will bag up their used coffee grounds and give them away for free, they are usually in a bin near the entrance, they call them Grounds for the Garden (or something similar).

I find it's annoying the amount of damage other folks dogs and cats can do, like when I moved in to my mobile home, I found that the former owner just let her dog urinate on the carpet and not clean it up. This ruined the floor because the underneath layer was partical board. I find folks say they pick up after their dogs poop but they don't really DO the picking up. They believe others don't see it, but it really smells and is germ laden.

So where exactly is your dog supposed to pee if not on the lawn? I understand that there may be certain spots you don't want them to poop in, but they have to go somewhere. My parents have one area of the yard fenced in specifically as a potty area for their dogs and the dogs use it as just that. They don't really go in the rest of the yard.

For a couple of these tips all I can say is NO, NO, and NO.

Seriously? Dawn to treat fleas? NO! While Dawn (or any shampoo) will kill fleas on your pet, it does nothing to keep fleas from jumping on ten minutes after you let them go. The pet needs ongoing treatment, a spot on product or better yet, Comfortis, a pill you get from your vet. Treating your house with an insect growth regulator is a must if you want to control fleas. Salt just won't do it.

It's really important to control fleas, too. Fleas can give your pet tapeworms. A bad flea infestation can make your pet anemic. I've seen small dogs and cats die from severe flea infestations. Flea bite dermatitis can lead to really nasty skin infections that are difficult to treat. This is one time to worry less about the whole "green" issue and use something that works, and works quickly.

Do not, I repeat, Do not try to de-skunk a dog with tomato juice. It does NOT work. Groomers and vets have a recipe and method that does work, though. Baking soda, peroxide, and dishwashing liquid (here's where you can use that Dawn.)

Mix the baking soda and peroxide to make a paste. Add about one teaspoon of dish soap. Apply to DRY coat (do not bathe pet first, that just spreads the skunk spray through the coat). Allow the mixture to remain on coat at least 10 minutes, then rinse and shampoo with a degreasing pet shampoo or Dawn. Follow up with a good conditioner.

I think it's important to mention that solid (undissolved) baking soda, if eaten, can kill. If a paste using baking soda is to be left on a pet - it is VERY important to stress that you MUST keep the pet from licking it's fur while it is on them.

peroxide + baking soda + dish soap...Basic chemistry says that the peroxide will combine with the baking soda to form water and an Na based mix with the soap and water.

In other words, why mix at all, rather use the dawn as is cuz its really the only active ingredient in this combination...

I have used cayenne mixed with red pepper flakes and YES it does work! Since the patch of grass is in front of my house there are several dogs who want to use it but if you stick with putting out the cayenne and pepper flakes the dogs take notice. I seen one dog owner trying to get the dog on the grass but the dog won't go on it. I buy the super big containers of the spices and keep put it on. It does work!! You can't put it on once and expect a miracle..its not going to happen!
