Young or old, dogs continue to come up with new tricks. One of the latest -- and most life changing -- is a canine's ability to detect changes in blood-sugar levels in diabetic people. According to KLTV, this new type of service dog is especially important to young children with diabetes.

This is something that Sara Wilson knows all too well. Wilson's daughter, Faith, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at only 9 months old. The disease makes Faith susceptible to organ failure if her blood-sugar levels drop too low. The idea of Faith requiring life support because of a failure to detect a drop in her levels kept Wilson up at night and left her always feeling anxious.

After numerous sleepless nights and close calls, Wilson decided to look into obtaining a service dog. She contacted Wildrose Kennel in Mississippi about adopting a specially trained canine, and with the help of her church and community, she was able to purchase Ruby.

Like all other Diabetic Alert Dogs from Wildrose, Ruby is a British Lab, bred to have an extremely keen sense of smell and outstanding temperament. Wilson believes that Ruby has already far surpassed her face value. Over the past two years, the dog has assisted in saving Faith's life countless times.

Ruby is able to do this through scent and careful training. The caring canine detects changes in Faith's blood-sugar levels through smell. With this signal, Ruby picks up a particular toy and brings it to Faith's mother, so she knows to test and treat her daughter.

Not only is Ruby a life saver, but she is a member of the family as well. The adorable and eager-to-please pooch easily keeps everyone's spirits up. Wilson said that life without the dog is impossible to imagine, because it would mean thinking about life without her daughter too. Luckily for the Wilson family, this four-legged savior is here to stay.
