New & Unusual Cat Breeds

spotlight on... More on PawNation: Breeds, Cats, Kittens, New Cats On The Block

Keeping tabs on cats? They've been doing some crazy things lately. Not only are felines controlling the Internet, but they've been creating new and unusual breeds for us humans to fall in love with. Check out these new cats on the block and see if one of these rookies is right for you.

    LA PERM

It's clear how this breed found its name. The La Perm's cute, curly coat sets the breed apart from its cat cousains. La Perms originated from a litter of barn kittens with a genetic mutation where they were born bald but eventually grew the breed's signature curly hair. These felines are known as real lap cats, which they pair with a gentle curiosity. (Catster)

    CHEETOH CAT

Cheetohs are no longer just a snack food. The Cheetoh Cat is a hybrid of the Ocicat and the Bengal, and also has ties to the Asian Leopard. While the cats are less domesticated than other felines, this does not make them a poor pet. Cheetohs are loyal and affectionate cats that won't turn to aggression. Still, at weights between 15 and 23 pound, you should be ready to take in a big kitty. (TICBA)

    TOYGER

This stunning feline was created by breeding a Bengal cat and different types of tabbies. The result is a sweet companion, decorated with tiger-like stripes. Toygers are known for being smart and relaxed. The breed's adoring demeanor makes them great for folks living alone or in smaller spaces. (Catster)

    PETERBALD

A hybrid of the Donskoy and Oriental Shorthair, the Peterbald was left with a rather exotic look. The breed's bat-like ears and strange coat will catch your attention, but the Peterbald's attitude will win your heart. The breed is a true performer gracefully playing and jumping, creating its own aerial ballet. These enthusiastic cats accept any and all animals and people into their social circle. (TICA)

    AMERICAN CURL

The American Curl's unique looks have easily won the breed plenty of fans. American Curls originated from two strays that were found with curled back ears. Over the past few years the breed has grown and received the reputation of being kind and adaptable, as well as big cuddlers.

    HIGHLANDER

Don't be concerned, the Highlander's ears are supposed to look like that. The breed's origins can be traced back to the highland lynx, along with the desert lynx and jungle curl. This wild ancestry gives the Highlander a "big cat" look. It also means that the cat has some extra energy to burn off. The Highlander is best suited for a larger space and a home with lots of social interaction. (Cat Channel)

    MUNCHKIN

The pint-sized Munchkin started popping up after a Louisiana woman rescued two pregnant felines with short, stubby legs. The woman gave a few of the kittens away, allowing the genetic abnormality to spread. Now Munchkin cats are sought after, not just for their unique look, but their snuggly and playful personalities.

    MINSKIN

This precious shortie is the mix of several kinds of kitties including the Munchkin, Sphynx, Burmese and Devon Rex. This conglomeration of cats produced a short-limbed, sparsely furred, color-pointed feline. The Minskin is known as a real people pleaser, especially enjoying the company of children. The breed makes up for its short stature by using its intelligence to overcome any height-related difficulties. (TICA)

    SERENGETI

Resembling the wild Serval cat, the Serengeti is actually a hybrid of the Bengal and Oriental Shorthair. The cat stands out thanks to its stunning coat and bright yellow eyes. As a pet, the Serengeti is ideal for owners looking for an energetic feline. The breed can stay entertained with toys and games for hours on end. (Serengeti Breed)

    NAPOLEON

Named after the great conqueror with a height problem, the Napoleon breed doesn't have any hard feelings about its size. The breed is a mix of Munchkin and Persian cats. Napoleons are said to have the same relaxed and loving temperament as their Persian cousins. Additionally, because the breed was created to have less of a peke-faced look, Napoleons aren't likely to have as many health problems as Persians. (The Napoleon Cat)

    SOKOKE FOREST CAT

These cats stand out from the crowd due to their unique "wood-grain" patterned coats. The breed originally appeared in Kenya, but was developed in Denmark, earning the feline the nickname "African Tabby." The Sokoke knows how to keep itself busy, with the ability to be entertained by simple toys for hours. They are also known for being quite the motormouths, enjoying frequent conversations with their owners.

    CHAUSIE

One of the first domestic and jungle-cat hybrids, the Chausie is still a relatively recent breed. The cat's long and lean looks speak to its wild past. Chausies also exhibit their jungle roots during play. This breed is active and agile, zooming around the house with ease. Because of the cat's activity level they may not be suitable for first-time cat owners or people with young children. But owners of the breed will attest that, for the Chausie's active side, there is an equally affectionate one to balance it out. (Cat Channel)

    OJOS AZULES

Here's a feline that you will be begging to have staring contests with. The Ojos Azules originated in a New Mexico feral cat colony. The breed's identifying trait is its transfixing, deep blue eyes. Ojos Azules can vary in size and coat. Unfortunately, since the breed is so rare, little is known about their overall demeanor. (TICA)

    PIXIE-BOB

While the name suggest this wild-looking cat has bobcat origins, researchers are still uncertain on how the Pixie-Bob originated. The trademarks of the breed include its gorgeous coat, short tail and polydactylism, which means the Pixie-Bob sometimes has extra digits. As a pet, the breed is gentle, trainable and known for forming strong bonds with their owners. (Breed List)

Why would anyone make new breeds when thousands are homeless and dying in shelters everyday. That is just disgusting.

I have two completely bald peterbalds, Half sisters. They are small, 4.5 and 5.5 lbs. They are extremely friendly, love people and complete clowns. Rose is "lilac" and Petunia is a blue point. I am allergic to cats, and with no hair they are wonderful. They sleep with me at night and keep my feet warm. They greet me when I come home. Love to fetch. A wonderful breed!
