There are few feelings worse in the world than the thought of a pet disappearing. Yet there is no greater joy than the moment you're reunited with your missing four-legged, furry or feathered friend. It's no surprise that these pet owners were beyond blissful when they reclaimed their pets after some seriously unusual circumstances. Find out what these animals had to endure to find themselves back at home with their families.

    CARMEL, COME HOME

Stacey Enrenhalt was shocked when she discovered that her bunny Carmel had gone missing. Carmel was used to hopping around the home freely, but must have found his way outside. The Enrenhalts tore the house apart, but still could not find Carmel. Stacey posted about her lost rabbit on Facebook, but soon accepted the fact that Carmel was long gone. Luckily for the Enrenhalts, the Mt. Airy Patch editors often run announcements about lost pets. A Patch editor found a Craigslist ad posted by Megan Commons. Commons had found a bunny and posted a 'found pet' ad on Craigslist. Thanks to social media, the dots were connected and a few days later, Carmel was on his way home to the Enrenhalts.

    BODHI BOARDS A PLANE

Bodhi, an Afghan herding dog, was flown into Pensacola, Fla. to be reunited with Sergeant Nick B., the man who rescued and bonded with him while serving in Afghanistan. The 13-year Army veteran was on patrol when he found the dog, whose ears and half of his tail had been chopped off, and he was tied up and covered in mud. His owner had planned to use the skinny dog for entertainment in dog fights. According to WALA-TV, Nick traded the owner several packs of cigarettes for the dog. After much time bonding, Nick and his unit became close to Bodhi. With the help of Puppy Rescue Mission, Bodhi was able to fly overseas to join Nick in his home.

    POLDI THE FORESTER

When Poldi the pet cat walked out of her family's home in Munich, Germany in 1996, she was (almost) never seen again. The Mosers desperately searched to find their missing cat but after months of looking, they gave up on believing they'd ever find him. According to The (U.K.) Daily Mail, hikers found a cat in the middle of a forest 16 years later, 20 miles away from the Moser family home. The cat had a name tattooed on his ear, as well as his owner's name. The hikers contacted the animal rescue center who then contacted Monika Moser. No one is sure where the cat was for all that time, but Poldi seemed happy to be back with his family.

    PIKO-CHAN THE PERCEPTIVE PARAKEET

Dogs and cats have microchips, but birds? Well, they can speak for themselves. One May morning, a pet parakeet named Piko-chan flew from his owner's home in a city outside of Tokyo and decided to perch on the shoulder of a guest staying in a nearby hotel. The patron handed over the bird to the police. However, a few days later, Piko-chan squeaked the names of the city and district where his owner lived. Then he revealed the street and the unit number of the house! When Piko-chan and his 64-year-old owner were reunited, she said that it wasn't the first time she'd lost a bird. The owner learned her lesson and taught Piko-chan how to tell people his address. Smart!

    THE MISSING PRINCESS

Six years had passed since the Allens lost Princess. She had escaped out of a hole in the backyard and it wasn't until two hours later that the family realized she was gone. Then, one fateful day, April Allen received an unexpected phone call. According to KTLA, a woman had found the missing Bichon Frise with what was believed to be her puppy. The woman brought the dogs to the animal shelter and thanks to her microchip, the Allens' information popped up. The family suspected that another person must have adopted Princess when they found her lost six years prior. But that didn't matter anymore. The Allens were just ecstatic to welcome Princess and her puppy, Bella, back into their home.

    CODY'S COMEBACK

The Cody family had no idea that they were adopting more than just a pet when Katrina the Turtle crawled into their lives. She spent so much time with the Codys--from sleeping in the kids beds to becoming the family's go-kart racing team mascot--Katrina was just as much a part of the family as every other member. On a very sad day in 2010, Katrina escaped from the backyard while the children were playing. They spent months searching high and low for their beloved pet to no avail. The Codys eventually had to move on with their lives, relocating to a new home and leaving all hope of finding Katrina behind. Then Trish Passman found a turtle hanging out in a parking lot. She picked up the turtle and saw an informative dog tag hanging from the back of her shell. Katrina the turtle is now safe and sound back with the Codys.

    LUCKY LADY MARIE

Imagine waking up from a coma. What would be your first thought? For John Allen, it was "Where is my dog?" Allen had suffered from a severe bike accident that left him in a coma. Allen's dog Lady Marie was also in tow. Allen had a trailer attached to his bike carrying Lady Marie. Sadly, the duo were hit by a passing car when the driver fell asleep at the wheel. The impact sent Allen flying into the street. Afraid and shocked, Lady Marie ran. Luckily, a local shelter was able to find her limping off not too far away from the scene of the accident. Once Allen had healed, he began to ask for his canine companion. After three long months of waiting, worrying and healing, Allen and Lady Marie were reunited.

    BURMA'S BAILOUT

Burma, a thoroughbred horse, was only 3 yearsold when Megan Adams bought her. According to WNCT, Adams became extremely close with her pet horse as they grew up together over the years. After graduating from college, Adams decided to take a road trip with a friend and asked a woman to look after Burma. Sadly, when she came back from her trip, both Burma and the woman were gone. For seven years, Adams had no idea what had happened to her horse. Then a friend told her to check out a horse rescue page on Facebook. There was a video showing Burma. It said that she been rescued from an auction where she was set to be slaughtered. Adams cried hysterically and contacted the horse rescue in Connecticut. She learned that Burma was sold to the auction by a testing facility where she spent five years being bred. Thankfully, she was able to bring Burma home and nurse her back to health.

    MILLIE MAKES HER WAY HOME

In early April, a white car pulled up to Andrea Taylor's home in Hutchinson, Kansas and plucked Millie the Pit Bull from the front yard. Millie was a therapy dog to Andrea, a blind 5-year-old girl with cerebral palsy. After Millie was gone, Andrea spent many nights crying and waiting at the window for Millie's return. A few weeks later, Andrea woke up early one morning to find Millie returned. The dog had suffered from some scrapes and scabs, but managed to find her way back to the Taylor's front porch. Andrea was delighted to have her back.

    BOY SAVES SPARKEY

When an unnamed boy posted an ad on Craigslist offering to trade his bike for something interesting, a man responded to the post and exchanged a 12-year-old blue-and-yellow Macaw. But the parrot's new owner had a suspicious feeling about where the man got the bird. He called authorities to see if anyone had reported a missing bird. The boy's hunch was right. Chere Pulido's service parrot, Sparkey, had gone missing. Pulido's service bird was trained to dial 911 for his owner who suffered from a cancerous brain tumor. A couple weeks prior, Pulido had found Sparkey's cage empty. According to Pulido, neighbors heard bird screams in the middle of the night. It was clear that Sparkey had been stolen. Although the bird-napper has yet to be found, both parrot and owner are happy to be reunited.

    BAILEY THE BUS RIDER

Bailey, a Jack Russell Terrier, must have been in need of some fresh air when he boarded the Line 12 bus in Tigard, Ore. According to KPTV, it was 5:30 a.m. when Bailey was spotted by a fellow bus rider. He sat with the dog until a TriMet supervisor could pick her up in Portland. Thankfully, she was reunited with her owner at Multnomah County Animal Services Shelter. Although Bailey's owner Adam Baker was relieved, he wasn't totally surprised his Jack Russell had boarded a bus for a joyride. According to KPTV, Bailey did not have a microchip or collar on, so her picture was posted online and on TV. Neighbors and friends of the Bakers alerted Adam. Bailey is back home safe and sound with her collar on.
