Good Samaritan Takes Plunge Over Cliff to Save a Dog

More on PawNation: Awesome, Dogs, Heart-Warming, Rescue, Safety
If a dog jumped off a bridge, would you follow it? 19-year-old Luis Lopez did. According to WNBC-TV, the teen plunged over a steep embankment to help rescue a stranger's dog.

While walking through his New Jersey neighborhood, Lopez heard a woman's screams from a nearby park. He raced over and found the woman was upset over her dog, who had slipped through the park's guard rail and fell down the cliff below. Without giving it a second thought, Lopez hopped the railing, following the dog's path.

After sliding 25 feet down the cliff, Lopez saw the dog hanging by his leash from a tree. Lopez scaled the tree, took the dog in his arms and began the slow climb back up the cliff. Eventually, Lopez reached a spot where he could not ascend any further. Fortunately, a team of local firefighters arrived to help.

The crew, equipped with ropes and harnesses, retrieved Lopez and the canine from their predicament. Both the dog and his hero left the dramatic incident with only minor injuries and are expected to make full recoveries.

I maybe would have at least searched quickly for or purchased (if possible in that area) a strong rope and tied it around myself first…as I'm just not that agile! I think sometimes young people who haven't yet broken any bones or had other serious injuries don't stop to think how badly they can get hurt. Very kind of him to help though, and glad he and the pupdog are okay. :-)

Years ago some guy dove into a Yellowstone hot pool in a vain attempt to save his buddy's dog, despite shouted warnings from many bystanders. Dog died, would-be rescuer died, horribly. Of note: the dog's owner was too smart to dive into a pool that measured 200 degrees.

In an emergency situation some will always be willing to help and some will always not be willing to. It's one's response to emergency situations that makes the real difference. Most panic, some don't see the risk as worth it, for a few time slows down and you can choose what the best option is. I'm not claiming to be any of these types; however, I once pulled a girl out of a car on fire after her own father left her and she wouldn't be here today if i hadn't. People who care take chances, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Not all issues need to be analyzed when the life of another is at hand, unless of course you consider that life beneath your own.
