According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 400,000 children seek medical attention for dog bites each year, and children are the most frequent victims of dog bites.

The American Kennel Club offers the following tips for kids on how to be safe around dogs.

Wait just a minute - - this article says to let the dog sniff your hand. Another article I read just last week says that the LAST thing you want to do is offer your hand to a strange dog - that offering your hand to sniff is a myth and an invitation to get bit. So, apparently there are a lot of people who go on the internet to offer advice who know absolutely nothing about their subject!!
