One-Eyed Bulldog Paints 'Masterpieces'

When Austin artist Jessica Stone rescued a Bulldog last fall, she had no idea it would be a canine after her own creative heart. According to WAVY-TV, Stone wasn't in the market for an apprentice, but she gained one the day she adopted Piper, a 7-year-old, one-eyed Bulldog, from San Antonio Bulldog Rescue.
The disabled dog was in need of an owner with a lot of patience and understanding. "The guy who surrendered her wouldn't give San Antonio Bulldog Rescue any information. He said that he was afraid of her because she can be grumpy," said Stone. "And if you don't know how to be patient and understanding with her, then she probably would be scary. She gets startled easily. You can't bug her when she's sleeping. She doesn't like to get picked up because it hurts her hips."

But soon, by complete serendipity, Stone discovered something that helped ease Piper's nerves. One day, when Stone began to paint, Piper followed. Instead of walking away, the partially blind Bulldog stared and showed interest in what Stone was doing.

"She basically told me she was interested in painting. I know that sounds crazy, but it's true, by the way she behaved every time I would paint. She gets upset if I paint and I don't let her paint."
Stone began to help Piper with her passion and handed her a brush. "I've always been honest about the fact that she chews on the brush and I hold the paper and I change her colors, but good luck trying to get your dog to do it."

Piper's pieces are featured on her Facebook page where she has approximately 2,700 fans. Piper can cover her own medical bills thanks to pieces fans have purchased on her website. And Piper hasn't forgotten where she comes from. A percentage of her profits goes directly back to the San Antonio Rescue group.

May 16 2012 at 12:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou are both wonderful. Jessica you are wonderful for rescuing this precious creature. And Piper, you are wonderful for still being able to trust humans. Although not sure what to call someone that would mistreat you or any other dog. I love the artwork and will watch for more. : )

May 16 2012 at 10:56 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI appreciate all of the sweet comments and don't understand any of the negative ones! Piper is a one-eyed rescue dog who is painting to help other dogs in need. It doesn't matter what you think of her technique. All that should matter is a rescue dog is making a difference and having fun doing so. I feel sorry for the people who are missing this. No, it's not a joke. No, she doesn't just chew on her brushes. No, not any dog can do it. Our other dog has no interest in painting. Most dogs would run away with the brush or try to chew the end with paint. If it's as easy as some people think, like the person who says his three dogs who can do it, then you definitely should to raise money for your favorite rescue group! I can't thank Piper's fans enough for the wonderful support and helping us raise donations! - Sincerely, Piper's Sidekick
