Orphaned Otter Reaches New Home Via FedEx Plane

An adorable sea otter that was found orphaned in Alaska arrived in style to his new home this week. According to The Pittsburgh Business Times, the otter was taken from Anchorage to the Pittsburgh Zoo by a FedEx Express plane.
While it was probably a wild ride for the sea otter, the trip wasn't too out of the ordinary for FedEx Express. The shipper often deals with precious animal cargo requiring relocation to zoos around the world. Some of FedEx Express' most recent wild deliveries include two giant pandas, three orphaned grizzly bears and 25,000 sea-turtle eggs.

The president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo, Dr. Barbara Baker, said that she was grateful for the company's help and attention to detail when flying the otter to his new home. Baker also said that the animal was carefully supervised by marine zoo and veterinary officials throughout the flight.

Although the flight had little turbulence, this otter has had a rough road. At 5 weeks old, he was discovered sitting next to his deceased mother in severe winter conditions. The Alaska SeaLife Center took in the orphaned otter, giving him round-the-clock care and attention. Their efforts paid off. The feisty and friendly critter is now ready for his new life at the Pittsburgh Zoo. Let's hope it's all smooth sailing from here for this sweet, furry creature.
