100-Pound Dog Helps Owner Thatch Roofs
Axel, a 5-year-old Newfoundland/Labrador/Rottweiler mix, goes to great heights to stay by his owner's side. Literally.
According to Dogster, Axel often joins his owner, Richard Haughton, 30 to 40 feet in the air to watch him thatch roofs in Norfolk, England. Haughton claims the dog decided on his own to start joining him up on the rooftops.

Haughton said that he often brought the dog to work with him, but Axel used to stay on the ground or in the truck. One day, while Haughton and his co-worker were eating lunch on a roof, Axel scrambled up the ladder to join them, and he's been doing so ever since.

These days Haughton carries the dog up and down the ladder to ensure the dog doesn't fall. Once he's up, Axel spends most of the day watching over Haughton and scooting along the roof as the men work. Haughton's co-worker, Charlie Tedder, said that he sees Axel as the most adorable site manager around.

Haughton said that Axel makes it very clear whenever he's ready to get back on solid ground, walking to the ladder and wagging his tail. And some days, Axel isn't interested in observing roof work and decides to stay on the ground.
Perhaps more people should follow Haughton and Axel's example and make every day "Take Your Dog to Work Day," using proper safety precautions, of course.

April 26 2012 at 11:30 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy flat-coat retriever (a breed related to newfoundlands) climbs the ladder on the 2-story play fort in my parents back yard. When she was a puppy she would just take the slide down, now she doesn't like to do that and she will stand up there barking until we carry her down.
