Overweight Shelter Cat Weighs Almost 40 Pounds

Meow is a true fat cat. The orange-and-white tabby weighs in at almost 40 pounds. According to The Associated Press, the big guy has to waddle to get around due to his weight, but is trying to drop some of the extra cushioning so he can be adopted.

Meow ended up at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society in New Mexico after his 87-year-old owner could no longer care for the feline. Shelter workers say that the 2-year-old tabby has a cuddly demeanor to match his sweet, mushy face, and that he will certainly make a great companion. He just needs to shed some weight first.

Meow is currently living with a foster family and is being kept on a special diet. The big kitty must drop 10 pounds before he moves on to a permanent home.

Shelter employees are amazed and confused by how Meow could have reached 40 pounds in only two years, but believe the weight gain resulted from a nutritionally unbalanced diet. To be safe, the tabby has undergone testing to make sure that he doesn't have any serious medical issues.

Surprisingly, Meow is not the fattest cat of all time. That title belongs to Himmy, an Australian tabby that weighed 47 pounds. The record may have been broken in the decades since Himmy reigned supreme, but Guinness World Records has stopped accepting applications for the "fattest cat" title so as not to encourage people to overfeed their pets.

Failure to earn the heavyweight title is no concern for Meow. He's working hard to make his weight go in the other direction, dropping pounds so he can play and scamper without quickly tiring out.

Folks who are interested in Meow can follow his progress on the shelter's Facebook page.

I was so sad to hear about this cat's death. My heart goes out to his foster parents. It's always a sad thing when an animal dies. But at least he was well loved, both in his early life, as well as in his later life.

Granted, this is an extreme case. However, I think many people have a vague definition about "fat" cat. I didn't realize that my 5-year old tabby is overweight until one friend showed me a cool measurement chart. http://www.foundanimals.org/pet-care/ask-experts/is-my-cat-overweight
Then I decided to have a diet plan for it, for its health and long-living, you can find some tips here too http://www.foundanimals.org/pet-care/ask-experts/diet-feeding-your-feline

He's a beautiful fellow, but losing some weight will make him more comfortable and avoid an early demise due to diabetes or other weight related illnesses. If I could, I'd take him in a second!

Poor kitty is right. My girlfriend and I have a 2 yr old Norwegian Forest Cat, and he only weighs 12 lbs, which is normal for a cat his age. This poor kitty is 3 times that weight. It will suffer from things like diabetes, hip displacements, arthritis, and eventually heart attack. That's no way for such a young cat to live it's life. Granted we don't feed our cat any table scraps, but do give him tuna from time to time and lots of love, and play with him to keep his exercise up, but still, no excuse for a cat to weigh this much.

I understand how an elderly lady could love an animal and care for it, but one other fact that perhaps this story hasn't put out there may have been, was she in turn cared for by a live in nurse or hospice facility, because she alone could not care for herself. This is usually the case when such animals are found. I only hope that the family that is currently taking care of him now adopts him, as it will be tough to let him go once they have gotten him back in shape. You tend to grow attached to them, like they are members of your family. Good luck Meow....we're all pulling for ya! :)

I agree, Meow needs to lose weight bigtime. We have (My girlfriend and I) a 2 yr old Norwegian Forest Cat who weighs 12 lbs, and that is the normal weight for a male his age. This poor kitty weighs too much, will be on the risk of having diabetes, and isn't living a good life like it should. Sure it meows, but it's probably saying it needs help. No need to see the animal develop painfully throughout it's life and end up with things like diabetes, or hip displacements. Perhaps the kind family who is watching him, would be so kind to adopt him and keep him on the strict diet and give him the exercise he needs, because in the end, it will be his heart that will give out... poor thing...

alavol ----- Are you kidding? "Feed him all he wants and let him die happy." ? That's ridiculous !!! This poor kitty isn't having a good life. He's only two years old and wouldn't get much older if left like this. He basically still a kid and needs to be able to run and play. Yeah, he's going to die , but not happy and much too soon. You would call it love to let a cat eat itself to death?
