Hen Lays 'Eggless' Chick in Sri Lanka

More on PawNation: Birds, Chickens, Eggs, Farm Animals, Newborns, Weird
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? In this strange case, there was no egg, or at least not one found in a nest in the normal way. According to BBC News, a hen in Welimada, Sri Lanka recently gave birth to a healthy, fully-formed chick without laying an egg.

Instead of being incubated outside the hen, this chick was incubated and hatched from its egg while still inside its mother, before being born. The baby survived this unusual birth alive and chirping. Sadly, its mother died shortly after.

Veterinary officials from Welimada said they have never seen a chicken born quite like this before. The chief veterinary officer of Welimada, PR Yapa, examined the mother hen's body after her death and found internal wounds in the bird's reproductive system apparently caused by the hatching. Yapa said it was these wounds that led to the hen's death.

Meanwhile, the "eggless" chick has become quite a celebrity, appearing in media around the world. Does this bizarre event shed any new light on the eternal chicken-or-egg question? Actually, that's just an unanswerable philosophical dilemma. But what is sure is that the animal kingdom is full of surprises and wonder.

@ all the people pushing vegetarianism: weither you believe in evolution or creationism, humans are designed to be omnivores. look at the teeth you were born with, especially the canines. those bad boys are meat shredders. now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna eat some nice roast chicken with some fresh veggies. YUM!!

The most sickly people I have ever met were vegans, your body needs the proteins in meat.

Vegans & vegetarians are not unhealthy if they eat properly, & do not need to get their protein from meat. There is a lot of protein in beans, tofu, peanuts, green vegetables, quinoa, protein supplements, etc. The average carnivorous American consumes way too much protein, which interferes with calcium absorption & muscle mass & can be harmful to the kidneys.

Celticdragonbabe is right - had this chick truly been inside it's mother's body for 21 days, the hen would have long expired. There is nothing in a chicken's body that would have enabled the chick to have survived it's mother's body trying to expell it. I call shenanigans!!!

I am skeptical. In order for this to happen, the hen would have to be eggbound for the entire incubation. Eggbound hens are in great pain and die within a few days if not treated.

hopefully at least one person will succumb to the beauty of life these photos show and turn vegetarian. This good deed will be instantly rewarded with better health for the person too.
