Man Loves to Swim with His Pet Polar Bear
While other wild animals are being seized from homes throughout the world in an effort to ban them as pets, Mark Dumas shows off the extremely close bond he has with Agee, a 16-year-old polar bear.
More Polar Bears:

Dumas and his wife Dawn raised the now 800-pound Agee from when she was only a few weeks old. Since then, Agee has starred in high-budget TV advertisements and in movies like "Alaska." This video posted by Barcroft TV invites viewers into Dumas' home to witness what life is like living with a polar bear. Dumas and Agee swim, wrestle and even cuddle together, the normal sorts of things people like to do with their (much smaller) pets.

Although there have been many incidents of wild animals kept as domestic pets turning on their owners, Dumas remains unworried.

Like any other working bear, lion, whale, or wolf used in advertising and film. She's a highly trained and skilled animal working with an intuitive person who understands that she is both A) A bear and B) Family. If you don't maintain a close bond with a working animal, it won't be as responsive or as well behaved when it actually starts working. I'd much rather this guy cuddle and swim with his bear than the bear eat someone when asked to perform in a commercial.

April 14 2012 at 12:17 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHalf the people commenting about this bear being wild and dangerous are idiots because they most likely own dogs as pets. What do you think dogs are? Just because they have been domesticated for awhile now does not mean they are genetically incapable of attacking their owners. They are brought up and trained not to, just like this bear has been. As long as the owner understands it's capabilities and instinctual triggers (as you understand about your dog's), this man is in no more danger of getting attacked as you are from your typical household animal.

April 13 2012 at 8:19 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm not impressed. It's people like this guy who think wild animals make good pets that we end up hearing about being killed/mauled by that same pet.
April 13 2012 at 4:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyjust like with dogs, cats, birds, rats, hamsters, etc.? you don't have to be impressed. the bear isn't wild. she was raised from 6 weeks old by this guy. he's not just some guy who bought a bear from the wild and started playing with it. that's a lot different than some poorly informed person interacting with a powerful animal. relax, dude.

I was sitting here thinking of how awesome this was, and shows how all different types of species can get along if the environment is right. I was thinking of how absolutely insightful and inspirational it was. Then I read your idiotic comment, and it made me realize the disgusting reality we live in, where humans can't even get along with humans. Mainly because of people like you.
I think it's amazing, the relationship he has with this bear. But the dangerous thing is that it is rare, and these types of stories are what make less informed people think they can own wild animals as pets.
