We love all dogs at Paw Nation. Working dogs, show dogs, shaggy dogs and chic dogs. But it's the last two types on the list that you'll find in these "before" and "after" dog-grooming photos.

We took an adorable 10-year-old Pomeranian named Cassidy -- who had gone six months since her last trim -- and sent her to the New York Dog Spa and Hotel for a professional grooming. In an hour and a half, groomer Jacky Luong transformed this cutie from au naturel to clipped down and styled.

The process took a while. Cassidy's owner had been in the hospital, so the dog hadn't had her regular grooming and her coat was in bad shape. Because Cassidy's hair was long and severely matted, Luong first completed a rough cut with clippers to make the fur more manageable and the grooming easier for the dog. Then, with the aid of shampoo, clippers and lots of hand scissoring, Luong sculpted the fur into what's called a "slight lion cut."

To see Cassidy's transformation, click on the green arrows on the "before" picture below and, while holding the mouse button down, slide the arrow to the right to the see the "after" shot revealed. Slide it back to the left again to see how Cassidy started out.

Looked better befoer the grooming. Just needed brushed.

I agree, he looked like an adorable miniature lion.

Kepakemapa#3 Kepakemapa9-02-2010 @ 3:18PM

I agree, someone did not do the brushing and comb out that Poms need on a regular basis. I was told not to do the "lion" cut on my pom. The only time I had him groomed other then my comb and brushing was when he ws blowing his coat. I had a simple trim all over to even him out and not a shave down. That poor dog in the picture..you can see the nags and knots in his hair. How painful for him to be like that and then to add insult to injury the shave down........

kittylit#4 kittylit9-02-2010 @ 3:33PM

Didn't you read the article. The dog wasn't groomed because it's owner was in the hosptial!

Don't worry the hair will grow back and I'm sure the dog ISN"T upset at being shaved.

Pam#5 Pam9-02-2010 @ 3:58PM

Sorry, Will, but your ignorance is showing.

Will#6 Will9-02-2010 @ 4:19PM

I didn't know simply having an opinion that is different from another person's makes one ignorant Pam. I simply liked the dog before with longer hair. As for shaving, I have a dog that had to be shaved this summer due to a mess he got into that could not be groomed out, so I am familar wiht the porcess.

I think your "ignorance showing" commnet simply points to you own rudeness and intolerance of an opinion other than your own. Makes you sound like a bit of a jerky snob.

You're right. Looked better before. When did they take the after picture? Dog looks tense , wornout and hairless.

Pam#8 Pam9-02-2010 @ 4:48PM

Thanks for reminding me to choose my words more carefully, Will - I NEVER want to be one of those rude and intolerant people! I was just responding to your flat statement "just need some brushing". If that was the case, I don't think any groomer is anxious to shave a long-haired dog just for the fun of it. This little sweetie has the expression of a much happier pooch, and I am glad they were able to make him so much more comfortable. His coat will grow in, hopefully he will be kept brushed in the meantime, and then he will be back to what you and I prefer. ;-)

The Pom looked bad both ways. It only neede to be trimmed and groomed. SOmepeople do not need pets. Sadly this is one. Sorry the Owner was in the hospital, but still no excuse for the sadtreatment here.

Will - I think you are absolutely right!

Pam - It looks like most of us agree with Will......... maybe you're the one with the problem.

Jill#11 Jill9-02-2010 @ 7:16PM

Hey Will, I agree with you. I think the dog looked better with lots of hair. The new do is very lackluster. Yeah, just a good brushing would do with a detangler and lots of patience. The people here bust all be show persons for their dogs and groom from day to night. By the way I wonder if the dogs like all that crap done to them? I would think not but like you Will, that is just MY OPNION. Maybe these people need glasses if they think the dog looked so much better after grooming. And how it it that we think a dog looks so much better when humans style them. Anyone ever see a dog, wolf or any cannine in the wild?? They are beautiful just as they are without all the foo foo stuff that we torture them with. I go along with cutting out the matts and trim around their eyes so they can see. Just give me a real dog, preferably with a short coat any day of the week. I have no time for high matience dogs or their owners.

I agree

Will#13 Will9-02-2010 @ 8:58PM

Thanks for your comments and "support". I think Pam simply mis spoke and since i have pnuemonina i would not have spoken back otherwise - just tired. The dog needed sheared due to negelect but hopeflly his fur will grow back right. Someone needs to help the person in the hospital help keep the dog groomed. Yes he is cute with the fur and if we all took better care of our pets, or helped our neighbors care for thieirs it would be a better world.

Nice is as contagious as rude.

I don't know where that cut was done, but it is certainly not a lion cut. I don't want to be mean, but it looks horrible. You want to see an adorable Pomeranian with a Lion Cut you should see my dog. Now he looks like a lion. My daughter and I designed him, and trim him ourselves with a hair cutting trimmer. I can just imagine how much they paid to have it done. Would love to show his picture.

Clara#15 Clara9-02-2010 @ 2:47PM

I would have just had the "mane" trimmed a little (cleaned up) and the rest of the dog properly groomed. I like the before look better than the after lookl.

joan#16 joan9-02-2010 @ 2:50PM

Cassidy sure has to feel better in this heat we all have had this summer! He looks cleaner, as well!

Theresa#17 Theresa9-02-2010 @ 6:45PM

You cannot possibly tell how badly matted the dog in in the photo. If the undercoat was badly matted, it was more humane to clip it than leave it. The poor dog is 10 years old, and from his position in sitting, he's probably got lousy hips or arthritus, so clipping the hair rather than trying to pull and yank the tangles out was far kinder.
Most matted poms are far worse matted in the rear than shows in the front, if the front looks this bad, the rear was probably unsalvagable.
Of course, it's a lousy groom, very messy for a 'finished' groom, But clipping the hair off due to matting is the proper and humane way to handle a matted older dog.

kathleenrea#18 kathleenrea9-02-2010 @ 2:59PM

Like the "before" look better.....Cassidy looked cute . Once her fur grows back out, hopefully owners will keep it brushed & groomed so that Cassidy can once again have the shaggy (but groomed) look that seems to suit her ...I bet she has a great personality!

magsmom#19 magsmom9-02-2010 @ 3:04PM

That is one awful haircut Don't know how much they paid but I would ask for a refund.. But the dog probably feels better without the matted hair!

jujubdiver#20 jujubdiver9-02-2010 @ 3:17PM

I assume the reason the dog is "shaved down" is because it was matted....not because the groomer doesnt know what they are doing. And for those of you who say to just "brush it"...lets tangle your hair all up and then brush it out and see how you like it.
