A new luxury pet-only resort has just opened its doors across from Walt Disney World's Port Orleans Resort. The Best Friends Pet Care Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., boasts 50,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space (17,000 feet of it air conditioned), 10,000 square feet of covered outdoor play space, and a dog park for the exclusive use of the pets staying there (and their owners when they come visit). This means you can drop off your cat or dog on the way to your hotel and know your pet is staying in comfort and luxury.
Now, while you're getting your thrills on Space Mountain, you can schedule exciting services for your furry friend, like cuddle time and ice cream. Or if you're really looking to pamper your pet, you can book one of the four VIP (very important pet) suites.
Overnight boarding rates for dogs begin at $37/day ($34 if you're a guest at one of the Disney properties) and go up to $76 ($69) for the VIP suite. Cats are a little less pricey, starting at $23/day ($21) for overnight boarding in a two-level condo and going up to $32 ($30) for a four-level condo. The à la carte items vary: 10 minutes of playtime for your pup will run you $8 (but if he can play in a group, you can get 30 minutes for $15), while your kitty can get tuna on Ritz, cookies and milk or an activity toy for $3.
The resort houses up to 270 dogs and 30 cats, and also offers an area for pocket pets (like hamsters and guinea pigs). While the perks and amenities are sure to set plenty of tails wagging, not everyone is thrilled. People commenting at the Disney Parks Blog have been voicing their concerns about the fact that, because this new boarding facility is opening, all other Disney World kennels are closing.
According to Best Friends Pet Care's FAQs: "By centralizing the operations, we are able to offer more and better services to guests' pets." However, many Disney World veteran visitors are concerned. One big reason is that the price has increased, but another has more to do with just how accommodating these new pet accommodations are.
Those staying in RVs in Fort Wilderness -- the only pet and human-friendly resort at Disney -- no longer have a kennel they can walk their pets over to for the day while they enjoy the parks. Unless they've also brought a car along, they'd need to unhook their RVs to drop off and pick up their pets; no transportation services are being offered as of yet by Disney or Best Friends Pet Care.
What do you think? Would you be excited to board your Lady and Tramp at the new pet resort near Disney?

I frequently go to disney world and stay in fort wilderness campground with my dog. we utilize the pet loop all the time. it is fabulous. my dog loves the camping experience with us and loves his daily walks around the pet loops. he is friendly and socialable. he loves to stop by the other campers at their sites and also loves meeting all the other dogs camping in fort wiilderness campground. i would not board him at all. this is one of the features i love about fort wilderness campground.. it only costs me $5 a night extra. so why would in spend much more money using the best friends pet care. also many years ago i also had a rabbit with us camping along with our do. he is no longer living but when he was and i had him outside of our camper many campers would love seeing him too. so i would never use best friends at all.
in fact all campers love to take their pets with them where ever they camp. i have gone to many campgrounds on the east coast and that is what campers love the most, having their pets with them in their campers.
That is FANTASTIC, and long overdue. We took a long-awaited trip to WDW this Spring, and the worst part was leaving our beloved Alaskan Husky at home. And the location is perfect; Port Orleans is one of the most family-centered resorts in the entire complex, with a wonderfully quiet and relaxed atmosphere.
