Welcome to Local Lowdown, where we give you ideas for hanging with your hound (and kitty!) in your home city. We'll tell you about interesting local events, important activities, useful resources and other fun happenings all across the country. And feel free to help us do a better job by writing in with suggestions for local events near you.

Pet-festival season is in full swing. There are endless weekend opportunities to go outside with your dog. Or check out pet expos offering entertainment, and showcasing products and services for all types of pets. Whichever you choose, it's a great way to enjoy a Saturday or Sunday afternoon!

Below is a roundup of pet events across the country for the month of May. Not all events are listed here, of course, and that's where help from you comes in! Please post the events going on in your area in the comments section for all to see. Paw Nation's pet people want to know when and where to get out with their pups, or to learn more about pets, and you can help by spreading the word about events in your neck of the woods.

Berwyn, Ill.
Mark your calendars for the Chicagoland Great American Mutt Show on May 15 and 16! With all kinds of fun contests for dogs, performances by the Chicagoland DockDogs, and adoptable dogs from PAWS Chicago, there's something for everyone!

Charlotte, N.C.
Head to the Charlotte Pet Expo on May 8 and you'll find everything pets all in one place: trainers, groomers, rescues, shelters, vets, clinics, pet stores, retailers, hobbyist groups, and more. This free event is the perfect way to spend a Saturday!

Morgantown, W.V.
Grab your dog and head to the All Pets Expo from May 14-16. This event features entertainment, adoptable pets, and vendor booths with local services and goodies for your pets. While you're there, meet the guys from National Geographic Channel's Rescue Ink!, and check out amazing Three Rivers DockDogs.

New York, N.Y.
Come meet your new best friend on May 22 at the first ever NYC Adoptapalooza in Washington Square Park. Put on by the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, this festival will feature fun events and entertainment such as Disc Dog performances, dog training instruction, a doggie costume contest, and the stars of the event, the nearly 100 dogs and cats looking to find homes.
