Just like in an episode of "Lassie," this hero dog led police to the scene of a fire and helped save his family.

Buddy, a German shepherd, was with his owner, Ben Heinrichs, when his family's workshop caught fire. Once he and Buddy were safely outside, Heinrichs turned to the dog and said, "We need to get help." He didn't expect Buddy to actually do anything about it, of course. However, help is exactly what the shy dog brought -- in the form of an Alaska State Trooper, reports the Anchorage Daily News. The dog's heroic act was caught on the trooper's dashboard camera.

Buddy had gone off into the woods, and Heinrich assumed the pooch was hiding. In fact, Buddy had run out to the road, where he caught the attention of Alaska State Trooper Terrence Shanigan, who had been alerted by concerned neighbors when they saw a fireball erupting in the distance. Shanigan was having difficulty finding the fire due to the winding country roads. That's when Buddy suddenly appeared. On a hunch, Shanigan followed the dog and arrived on the scene just in time. He was able to talk the fire department through the difficult directions, and they put out the flames just before the fire spread to the family's home.

Buddy is being presented with an award from the Alaska State Troopers today, including a silver plated, engraved dog bowl, reports "Today" via the Associated Press. We're willing to bet he's getting more than a few extra cuddles and dog biscuits.

Such a great story - couldn't believe the footage. Reminds me of all those Lassie episodes when Lassie was barking her head off and Timmy said, "What's that? Grandpa fell into the well? The one on the other side of town? Not the one at the old Brown place but the one at the Johnson's farm?"

There is just nothing better than a German Shepard and I hope Buddy gets spoiled rotten after this. Obviously he was already an indoor dog. What a DOG! Most people couldn't have done so well. God loves you Buddy!!!!! Live long and athritis free!

GREAT JOB...but NOT unusual for GSD's...I also own them and have pups sometimes. GSD's are absolutely GREAT....the main reason being, they are independent thinkers; they CAN and DO think for themselves. Great problem solvers without our help! BRAVO!!

What an awesome story. It just amazes me when so called lower intelligence animals can exhibit an incredible amount of intelligence. In the other news story I read on AOL, the officer said that the dog kept looking back to make sure that the cop was following him! How smart is that. What a happy uplifting story, thank you.

When I was a kid, we had a German Shepard. Only dog I've ever seen or heard of that would chew bubble gum and spit it out when it lost its flavor...lol Good for Buddy and his family for having such a wonderful companion.

When I was a child my female cocker spaniel did something that was basically similar. When my uncle came to our house she came up to him, barked, started off in a direction and returned to him, barked and repeated the process until he followed her. When he arrived where she was leading him she could hardly contain herself, tail wagging so hard, her rear end was going too. She was showing off her new born pups.......as if to say "How about them apples, big boy?" Of course, he had to lavish on the praise and petting. Absolutely too funny. Great memories.

About Buddy-

Congratulations to Buddy and the Heroic act and fast moving to save his masters' life. Now......this is something wonderful and something to rave about that was caught on the police' camera- dash. This is something to be proud of and it took a creature of God to do this. This is better than excessive violence caught by the video on the dash of police's car.

Buddy deserves a Fillet Mignon medium rare....cut in small pieces, Baked Potato and anything else he wants. We all love you Buddy !!!! And God Bless You for what you did !!!
