This hero dog, who lives with her family in Erie, Colo., beat out nine other finalists for the national honor. The award recognizes dogs that exhibit "an extraordinary sense of courage or resolve by heroically helping persons in need," according to the HSUS.
Last winter, 14-year-old Kenai seemed more tired than usual after a day outdoors with her family in the mountains of Colorado's Western Slope. Kenai's owner, Todd Smarr, tells Paw Nation he thought she might have played too hard in the snow. But later that evening, after Smarr and his wife, Michelle, had settled down for the night in the basement of the vacation house they were renting with friends, Kenai began to whine and bark.
As Smarr tried to comfort Kenai, his friend Karen Hull who was also staying in the vacation home, got up and announced she was feeling ill. Smarr woke his wife Michelle to help, and moments later she collapsed in his arms. Smarr rushed to wake the rest of their friends and evacuate the house. The seven adults, two children and four dogs all escaped serious injury, although Michelle and Karen both required treatment in a hyperbaric chamber after being airlifted to a Denver hospital. They later learned the source of the carbon monoxide leak was the vacation home's oven.
Without the early warning from Kenai, Todd doubts that any of the house's inhabitants would have survived the night. Kenai is taking her newfound celebrity in stride. In addition to wining the "Dog of Valor" award, she was honored by the American Humane Association and the Colorado Veterinary Medical Foundation.
"She's the same compassionate and loving dog as always," says Smarr, who is using the experience to remind people of the importance of installing carbon monoxide detectors.
The HSUS competition also included online voting for a "People's Hero" winner, which was given to Calamity Jane of Aledo, Texas. Still recovering from having a front leg amputated and giving birth to a litter of seven puppies, Calamity Jane managed to scare off home intruders who had taken the residents of a neighboring home hostage at gunpoint. Calamity Jane was also chosen as the first runner up for the national title by the panel of celebrity judges.
The other national "Dogs of Valor" finalists were:
Benson (Binghamton, N.Y.): The 5-year-old rescued golden retriever alerted his family to a house fire across the street, giving his owners time to wake their neighbors and save them from the flames.
Jackson (Rahway, N.J.): When a 90-year-old neighbor was trapped under a fallen door, the 8-month-old Doberman summoned his owner to help.
Jobe (Omaha, Neb.): After his family's 19-year-old son suffered a severe allergic reaction, the 8-year-old Hungarian Vizsla barked and howled outside the parents' bedroom door. They managed to get their son to the emergency room in time.
Max (Little Neck, N.Y.): The yellow Labrador retriever barked, circled and even jumped on a fence to tell his owners that their neighbor's 89-year-old mother had collapsed in the garden, breaking four ribs and unable to call out for help. She invited Max to her 90th birthday party.
Milky Way (Rushford, Minn.): His owner had already gone to bed for the night when her sister suffered a stroke and collapsed in another room of the home. The 5-year-old terrier corgi mix sounded the alarm by barking and scratching at his owner's bedroom door until she woke and summoned help.
Porkchop (Saratoga Spring, N.Y.): This 9-year-old beagle-dachshund mix barked and bayed when his owner collapsed in the backyard, dislodging the oxygen tube he relied on to breathe due to a serious respiratory illness. Porkchop was loud enough to draw attention from a neighbor, who came to investigate and called 911.
Prozac (Sanford, N.C.): A double hero, the 3-year-old Bichon frise-poodle mix warned a family when an elderly relative began having trouble breathing, and later alerted the family to a fire in the attic.
RaeLee (Tampa, Fla.): The terrier mix's owner was outdoors watering her plants when her dog's insistent barking drew her inside. The dog raced to the side of her disabled son, who had suffered a life-threatening seizure. The owner was able to start CPR until help arrived, saving the young man's life.
There were nearly 100 entries for this year's competition, demonstrating "an incredible level of unspoken communication and loyalty between dogs and their families," HSUS innovations director Colin Berry tells Paw Nation. "All of the canine nominees acted not out of the self preservation, but rather for the purpose of saving those they love. We also had a respectable number of nominees who moved beyond their family and helped spare the lives of friends, neighbors and even strangers. That type of awareness is extraordinary."

And to think how some humans mistreat animals!!!!
hi i agree to your comment!!!!!
I agree too!! I always get misty eyed when I read these stories. Every pet is identified except Calamity Jane. Anyone know her breed or mix of? I think someone should compile a "Chicken Soup for the Hero Pets' Soul" annually with all the entrants. And of course limit entries to the first 150 or so or the book would generate a boom in entries. All should be recognized for the heroes they are. The book should have the ultimate winner on the front cover. That would be awesome. And yes, Kenai deserved it whole heartededly. It's scary to think that if she didn't get the owners she did, she could've ended up as a sad puppy mill story, or abused or left to rot in the backyard etc. and her owners and friends very well could've all died. Dog is God backwards. Amen......
You think about all the animals hurt by people. Then you need to open your
eyes around & look around.There are a shelters,rescues,organized groups,
who spend their lives, time,& money.Who really care for animals we take out
time out of lives also homes to be there for animals. Some people do not even
have money to take care of themselves but give of their lives, time, also money.
While others give to hate animal groups like PETA.What I would like to know
is were over 25 million dollars have all gone?
DOGS ARE THE BEST!
Aww what a beauty she is!
Dogs are just awesome, and that's all there is to it.
animals are so loving and trusting and what do humans do? they abuse them. peta keep up the good work. watch out for these wonderful animals. and whoever believes animals don't have souls, like God made you he made them.
I am an animal lover and do NOT support PETA. They're so focused on animal RIGHTS that they forget about animal WELFARE. They even oppose pet ownership; they consider it akin to slavery.
PETA also takes dogs from animal shelters, kills them and dumps the bodies in dumpsters. They have been prosecuted for this, but insist it is better to kill the animals than allow them to be adopted. PETA should not be permitted to have access to any living creature.
Luci, have you seen the video on PETA? I used to be a very strong supporter of them until this spy cam came about and I was shocked by the hypocrital the PETA and the other organisation really are. I can try to locate that video and email to you if you like.
Dear PETA,
Dogs aren't asking for equalisty ... you're being like a recent president we all know, who tries to help people, or in this case animals, that never asked for your help. You INSIST, or ASSUME, that they are feeling "oppressed" without even knowing for sure. Dogs can only read other dogs feelings the best and I know that we humans, can't understand EVERYthing dogs do and we might misinterpret things for something else...we are not ALL-KNOWING you know...so we should stop butting into people's lives, and animals lives, when they DON'T ASK for OUR help.
(I seriously think that PETA is really a dog-hating group under a name that makes it seem that they are caring and trying to protect animals.)
PETA is a joke they would rather all animals be dead than be pets.PETA
kills adoptable animals everyday. Support should go to shelters, rescues,
& other places who spend & spend to take care of the animals. I volunteer
in an animal shelter & I see many animal lives helped & saved there. But I
also see the lack of support for the animals. Volunteers there spend hours
do all they can to help these animals from dog,cats,birds,rabbits,etc...
PETA thinks animals being pets is abuse.
PETA kills animals what good work are you talking about? With all the neglect,
abuse,of animals. Were does PETA & the over 25 million dollars given to help
also protect animals gone to?Were you watching the News when a Vet from
an animal Hospital.Who told about PETA workers who came to his Hospital.
He talked about how they took a cat & it kittens to find them homes. At that
time there were dead animals found in dumpsters for over nine months.Police
were keeping a watch out for who they were. These PETA workers were going
to Animal Hospitals also Animal Shelters pick up cats, kittens, dogs, puppies,
etc..Then killing them & throwing them in dumpsters. When they were caught
their van was found filled with drugs to kill animals also other things. This is
one of many real live stories of PETA.Please tell me what good are they doing?
Did you hear the person who in charge of PETA said about it all?
PETA could become a no kill Shelter at any time. They put to sleep
1,0000 adoptable animals to death everyday for years now.
Good thing these dogs could bark! Lots of breeders and showdog exhibitors have their animals' vocal cords cut so they can breed near neighbors...profit from but not hear their animals...or keep dogs quiet in transit between shows. What happens when the dogs aren't profitable anymore, can't breed or bring home blue ribbons? Dumped, sounding like hoarse, raspy, chain-smokers, not dogs. It's disgusting, and so are the vets who perform this procedure, called debarking or devocalization. Some humans bite!
I did not know that, that just ruined my night.
Dogs do not have vocal chords!
DUH! Yes dogs DO have vocal chords. How do you think they make sounds???
This has got to be one of the stupidest comments I've ever seen...
I just love hearing about things like this! Dogs are truly man's best friend. I'm so glad that God made animals like dogs and dolphins to work in a truly compatible partnership with man!
