warehouse freezer survivor cat picture Vivi-Mari, Flickr

Frosty the feline is lucky to be alive after being trapped in an industrial warehouse freezer in England where temperatures hovered about 30 degrees Farenheit. Brrr! "We think he'd been in the warehouse for at least four weeks," a warehouse employee tells the (U.K.) Daily Mail.

The black-and-white cat, thought to be about a year old, was "spotted on several occasions by staff but no-one could catch him," reports the Daily Mail. Frosty, as the warehouse employees named him, could have reasonably escaped through the main doors but the noise of the delivery trucks roaring up to the warehouse probably scared the cat away from the high traffic exit.

Finally, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) put out a humane live-capture trap for Frosty to entice him into the cage with cat treats and water. "It's incredible that Frosty survived for so long in such a harsh environment," RSPCA spokesman Steve Sellars told the Daily Mail. It is believed that the frisky feline survived by eating frozen peas and licking moisture off frozen food packets.

Frosty did not escape his icy adventure unscathed. He suffered frostbite to his ears and tail and had to have them amputated. But other than that, Frosty will be just fine. "He's a lovely cat and he's become very playful," RSCPA employee Rachel Allcock told the Daily Mail. "We're looking forward to his full recovery and getting him to his new home."

One of the warehouse workers has already volunteered to give Frosty a new, warm, place to live.

Poor Frosty! At least he is ok, but it's sad he suffered some pretty serious ailments. Good on the employee for offering Frosty a home.

rich#2 rich3-13-2010 @ 1:30PM

they forgot to tell you its - 24 deg celcious thats about plus 10 deg f ,a animal could not survive - 24 f

mr_ed#3 mr_ed3-13-2010 @ 6:31PM

Actually, in the source story it's reported as -2 C ... which is +28 F ... but reported as -28 F. There was no "24."

mensawannabe#4 mensawannabe3-13-2010 @ 3:46PM

Actually, -24 degrees Celsius is equal to -11 degrees Fahrenheit, not +10 degrees F.

mr_ed#5 mr_ed3-13-2010 @ 6:41PM

THERE WAS NO 24!!! Ahem. Sorry ... follow the link to the original story, where it's -2 deg. C. That's just below freezing for water, which is 0 C and 32 F. (-2 C) x (9/5) + 32 = +28.4 F. Cold, yes, but not -24 F.

mr_ed#6 mr_ed3-13-2010 @ 6:43PM

I forgot to add: And not -24 C, either.

Laceyma#8 Laceyma3-11-2010 @ 10:09AM

Awwww!!!!!!! Honey!!!!! Good thing he's ok. How many of his 9 lives were used up. His new parents better keep him out of trouble! Certainly he doesn't have many lives left. He at least lost 3, one each escaped out of one ear, the other ear and the 3rd from the tip of his tail!!

Just to show you CAT'S are pretty tough.
I would reather be with a cat than a human......

I am so happy he survived - having just lost my kitty to illness, this makes me feel good that he survived and has a new home. I'm sure Frosty is still a beautiful kitty with his ears and tail now a stub. He has a survival war story that he can tell his buddies. ;p I hope his new mom and dad gives him lots and lots of warm beds and warm food. Great story!

They are tuff, The person who can train a common house cat to attack on command will be a very rich person indeed . So much better than a big smelly Rottweller

Magz#12 Magz3-13-2010 @ 7:35AM

I want to know why it took a whole freakin month before anyone callled the RSPCA to set traps to rescue the cat. They knew he was in there and tried to catch him on several occasions. The RSPCA should have been called at the first failure to get the cat out.

Frank Calenda#13 Frank Calenda3-13-2010 @ 8:14AM

First, I'm also happy that this story has a happy ending. I also agree with Magz that action should have been taken much earlier. The lingering questions I have in mind is, doesn't flesh freeze hard at the -24 degrees? Even if that's in Celcius, that's still -31 degrees F. I find it difficult to believe any warm blooded animal could survive that long.

Lynnie59#14 Lynnie593-13-2010 @ 2:00PM

Hi Magz, I TOTALLY AGREE with your comments! This is my reaction and my post on this board too. what the ??? You see a cat in a freezer (numerous employees saw him/her) and you simply put a halfhearted effort into maybe catching him at some point? There HAD To be a way to catch him much much much sooner than a month! For the love of God people! Think about it. This was very sad and he had to lose part of his tail and ears because of his fear from the loud truck sounds.
These people dropped the ball, at least now he is safe hopefully and whoever adopts him, keeps him INDOORS always... who knows where he came from?
We don't let any of our six kitties outdoors EVER, we've had many cats and never let them roam outside. There is no need, they are fine and happy and SAFE inside! This upset me knowing he sat in there for too long!

My sister in law loved cats, she lived in a $100,000+ home, she lived with her cats so long she was used to the smell, When she died her estate sold the house for less than the lot was worth, $25,000. If u have a house full of cats u should have a stranger come in and stink test it once in a while, cat stink is almost impossible to get rid of, in this case the floors and walls had to be replaced.

I am an animal lover...I feel humans are worthless (98%)...I am thrilled that there are some nice people still around...I am a retired senior on a fixed income and have found a tiny baby abandoned in a tree trunk...For three months he was fine and lively then one day last week he stopped eating and I have tried to get someone to work with me financially to find out what is wrong and every vet is only interested in MONEY MONEY, MONEY not the life of the animal...Vets are no better than human doctors who also are not interested in their patients but how much money they can get out of them and their insurance companies...I think all drs and vets who only want money should have their licenses revoked ...I know if I dont get help soon the little kitten that I named Angel will die because of the greed in this world..

Heather#17 Heather3-13-2010 @ 8:54PM

Thats a shame. How about trying your local animal shelter? Maybe they can help.

ConnieJ#18 ConnieJ3-13-2010 @ 8:56AM

Why are you waiting for this poor kitten to die? I don't know where you live, but in most cities there is at least one vet who runs a clinic (similar to what hospitals have) that will assess and treat your kitty for a nominal fee. Just because you are on a fixed income (as I am) doesn't mean your pet has to die. So get moving and get your pet treated!

Lynneb88#19 Lynneb883-13-2010 @ 9:00AM

I am so sorry to hear you going through this Anita. I also know exactly what you are talking about & it's the truth. Recently I was give a number of a vet that makes house calls in my area & I couldn't believe my luck. First, not only does she make house calls, but, she is also much CHEAPER than our local vet in town. Have you checked to see if there is a vet that makes house calls in your area? I do pray for you & your kitten. I pray everything works out for you.

Faydra#20 Faydra3-14-2010 @ 12:37AM

Do you have a Humane Society where you live? Do you have a vet that you know well enough you could get some antibiotics from to get the kitten started on without having to bring the kitten in? You need to do something & fast before it starves to death.
