life saver cat Sumo's picturedixieroadrash, Flickr

When a stray cat strutted into her life last summer, Judy Danchura of Canada could not have imagined how the orange and white tomcat she nicknamed Sumo would end up saving her life. Whether it was by accident or by design, we'll leave up to you to decide. But without question, Sumo's actions alerted Danchura to a tumor growing in her breast, enabling her to get an early diagnosis of cancer and begin treatment, reports CBC News. Here's how it happened.

Last June, according to CBC News, Danchura noticed the orange-and-white cat moseying around her backyard. She put some food out for him and went about her day. At 3 a.m., the cat came back, meowing so insistently that Danchura let the stray into her house. After making a litter box, Danchura went back to bed.

"While she and her husband slept," reports CBC News. "The cat hopped onto the bed and walked across her body. As it stepped on her breast, Danchura was struck by an unusual shot of pain."

"I sort of went, 'Oh geez, there's definitely something wrong there,'" Danchura tells CBC News. In fact, there was a lump in her breast.

She went to the doctor and learned it was a tumor, and that it was malignant. Because it had been detected early, and she began treatment immediately, Danchura's chance of survival is estimated at 95 percent, reports CBC News.

Danchura has come to regard Sumo as her four-footed angel. "I sometimes feel overwhelmed because I feel humbled," she tells CBC News. "I can't understand why this animal turned up for me." Was it a random stroke of luck that Sumo visited her home, insisting to be let in? Or was Sumo meant to tell her something?

Tell us what you think Can animals sense illness in their owners? Do you believe that Sumo's actions were just good fortune or something more?

This is truly amazing. This cat was sent by someone/some being/guardian angel,
whatever to help this woman. It is too much to think it was just by accident.
This cat deserves a golden litter box!

I agree. In Providence, RI, there is a Hospice Center where the resident cat would go to a patient's bed and stay there for hours. Only the people he stayed with passed away while the cat was visiting. It became a little creepy if the cat walked into someone's room. Even though these people knew they were dying of something, the cat would stay and comfort them. I have also heard stories of dogs (as well as cats) who detect cancer in their owners. This cat came specifically to this woman at this time. More than just coincidence??????

Yes of course there is meaning to this.....animals are instinctive by nature....they sense all sorts of stuff...especially an illness or a death that is coming...there are tons of stories for instance a man was sitting watching tv. and his dog came over and kept licking the same sore on the mans leg which turned out to be cancer.....I myself have a heart condition...there are rare times when one of my cats "leo" comes to lay with me to watch tv. and I notice he lays his head across my heart.....another time I had just gotten the flu shot and I was really sleepy as a side effect afterward, as I was laying down to nap, my cat "tommy" came over to me and started to lick my band aid that was on my arm over the injection site.....so yes animals can be truly our saviors in disguise and sometimes comfort us like no human can, we just dont give these precious creatures the credit they all so deserve.....

Animals are truly a blessing in so many ways. I don't trust or like people that don't like animals. This story also debunks the republican wingnut fiction that patients die waiting for health care in Canada. Sounds like she saw a doctor and got treatment right away.

I had a similiar experience 7 years ago. My cat would get on the couch with me and would keep poking his head the side of my chest. He would do this for several minutes and several times a day. A few weeks later I had a heart attack. I think my cat sensed something wrong. He never did it again after I had the attack.
And people call them dumb animals.

This cat needs and deserves all the love you can give it. I love both dogs and cats and they are there to take care of you. When you feel depressed you can see it in their eyes. When you are sick they can feel it also. Strays are sent to you for a reason. We will never know. We can only assume. God is there for us all in different ways.

Animals have a strong sense of smell and when there is something even the slightest off our bodies give off certain chemical smells and the cat was able to detect that smell. Also, the fact that the cat kept meowing insistently tells me that the cat was well aware of what was going on. Therefore, it was no accident!

I believe this cat has a sixth sense and knew there was something wrong with her/his owner. The feline then took action and was probably trying to communicate there was something wrong to her/his owner. Thank goodness for all the furry little angels in the world!

This was a stray cat, this woman was not it's owner, at the time. I believe the cat could sense something WAS wrong with her and had to find some way of letting her know. God Bless this cat and I hope her now owner is free and clear of all cancer.

Cats don't have owners. They have staff.

The Bible says, "Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so some have unwittingly entertained angels" Hebrews 13:2. This could very well mean animals too.

Animals have senses we do not have or don't know how to use-
they are a gift to us- more than we are to them- I honor them
and all their instincts- if only human did "act like animals"
it would be a much better world
- we are the lesser species in so many ways

They say Dog is God spelled backwards, and I think Cat should stand for Certified Angelic Tom (eve though female cats are, too). Every pet I have had has helped me out a lot through my neurosurgeries, etc. They always knew when I did not feel well as a kid.

Despite having grave health issues, my 4 sisters talked me into going to the beach
with them. I could not be in the sun so I sat under a tent. A lady was walking her
dog when it broke loose from her and came straight to me and licked my hand then
sat beside me! Later in the day we were shopping when another dog came straight for me! We were in a Bible book store sitting in the floor when the owners dog came to me and sat down! It was so totally strange that it happened three times in
one day! I thanked God for ministering to me through these precious animals!

A few years ago , it was found that I had had alot of "pre-cancerous" issues going on. A few months after being diagnosed my English Mastiff kept harassing me...wouldn't leave me alone. I finally went back to the doctor and found that it had become full cancer. Animals do know(sense) things we can't. I thank my dog every day!

Jody Brown#20 Jody Brown3-10-2010 @ 2:13AM

I rescued a llarge black lab retriever 5 years ago. From day one he would rest his head in the middle of my stomach area. Sometimes he would look up at me and just whine. He doesn't do that with anyone else, just me. 3 months ago I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Doctors told me I have had this cancer for years. I had surgery last week. Hopefully we got it all in time. The dog now just sits down by me to be petted but doesn't put his head on my stomach. I think he sensed something wrong and was trying to tell me.
