Charlie's journey "home" began when a New Orleans couple vacationing in Taos spotted him running down the street. He wasn't wearing a collar, so they assumed he was a stray. The couple fell in love with the white dog, who jumped into their car as soon as they opened the door. As Soleas told Paw Nation, "It is very common for Charlie to run off because he is very cute and he understands his affect on people. He is the most free willed dog I have ever met." And if this doesn't blow your mind, nothing will: By coincidence, the couple even named the dog Charlie.
After spending a few days trying to locate Charlie's owner, the vacationers decided to keep him, driving with him for three days to their home in New Orleans. But when a vet at Magazine Street Clinic scanned Charlie's chip, they discovered that not only did the dog have an owner, but that owner was staying nearby. Soleas told Paw Nation, "It blew my mind when he showed up. I thought I was dreaming. People didn't even believe me because the story is so crazy!"
He went on to say, "Charlie is the same as ever. The craziest part of all this to me really was that I was having a hard time in NOLA. Ever since I rolled into town, things just were not right, and the moment I picked up Charlie, things got increasingly better. That's how I know Charlie came down there for me."

What a sweet story. I know you couldn't take him with you but you should have. He just wanted to be with you. He is your best friend. Very smart to find his way to you. Glad you had the microchip in him. Otherwise, he would be another's best friend. God bless Charlie and may he live a long, healthy life. Love and cherish him all he days of his life. Love and prayers from Virginia.
they let him run loose, bad owners
He is not a bad owner...he had a microchip installed so that Charlie was able to be identified. And the story did not say that they "allowed" him to run loose just that he went missing after his owner left for New Orleans. I think this was a very heartwarming story and I'm very glad Charlie was reunited with his owner.
the dog can get struck by a vehicle with a chip. bad karma to roam loose with the nut cases around..
Yeah, sure.....and faith healers are real and alien abductions happen....LMAO..
Some faith healing is real. I am a normal person, work on a computer for a living, but I can take a wort off of you by suggestion. I don't know how this works, but I think I inherited the ability from my grandmother. I took one off of a skeptical Church of God minister who later ask me how I did it. I can't tell you, I don't know.
NOW this is truely a miracle that God our father has produced... It truely is good to hear and to read , miracles of love do exist... What a great way for Charlie to find his owner, and at the same time, finding other humans beings that truely cared for him... May Charlie live the rest of his life with those that truely love him! May the original owner take good care of him, Always showing him he is loved and valued everysingle day, in every single way.
Thank you for sharing this story with the world pawnation.& Thank you for Charlie Dear father God.
Having three dogs, I wouldn't let my dogs run loose. They're a part of my family and letting them run the streets I feel is like letting young children run in the streets--it puts them in an unsafe place to be hit by cars or to be picked up by some stranger. Responsible and loving owners take care of their pets and want to keep them safe. The microchip isn't a GPS device, if the couple hadn't been honest and wanted to keep Charlie they could have done so. I, too, am glad he was reunited with his owner. I just hope the guy learns something from this.
How sweet it was for those caring people to "find" a dog that just "happened" to jump into the car eagerly and willingly. This should have told them instantly that this was not your average stray. Apparently the dog was well fed and cared for or they never would have let into the car to begin with. How wonderful that the dog rode 1200 miles with them and then they took him to a vet. I wonder what for. As for the "miracle"? Six degrees folks, six degrees.
Great story, but the writing could use some help.
How did the Vet know Stephen, Charlie's owner, was nearby?
Owner's can electronically update the info on the chip when they move.
Charlie not only traveled, but hitch-hiked with folks to New Orleans, cool.
These are not BAD OWNERS giving an animal free will is the best gift you can give an animal....some animals grow so attached to thier human companions they cant stand to be away from them or they can sense that something isnt right and will follow ... my cat followed me all the way to work 20 miles from my house all because he sensed something was wrong if it wasnt for him following me and finding him at my job i would have never left early to return home i probally would have been trapped in a burning fast food joint granted he didnt get there til hours after i arrived at work but he was sitting on the hood of my truck screaming n a customer saw him and came in and said something i walked outside and there he was so i brought him home not even 5 minutes after i walked out of the burger king i was working in at the time it broiler went up in flames n then the fry vats exploded.... so i give my pets free will but that doesnt mean i dont care for them or pay attention to them or let them run loose i let them do as they want n they always come home!!
I had to take my dog to the ER once, and in a one hour time period, three people came in carrying their dogs, all of them hit by cars. The ONLY time a dog should be off leash is in an enclosed dog run, period. They are domestic animals, not wolves, who cover 50 miles every day. The idea that we are "denying" them free will or happiness because we keep them on leashes is wrong-headed and will almost always result in a lost animal or an injured one. For the sake of your dog's safety -- and others, if you own an aggressive breed -- KEEP YOUR PUP ON A LEASH. Please.
Either this is a story about some irresponsible pet owners or wack jobs. Look at the picture & choose. How can anyone possibly believe this dog walked at such a pace to either catch up with his owner or run away from home.
Yes it is a nice story and it would be even better if people like Carrie would leave the jesus and god stuff out of it. Can't we just have a good story without someone always bringing in their cults or politics?
The original owners don't deserve Charlie.
It doesn't mean a thing that the dog has a microchip. Many vets insist on giving animals microchips, especially if the animal has a history of running off. Animals should never be given the ability to range free and run loose. There are too many diseases out there that can be picked up by animals; cryptoccoccis from birds droppings which is deadly, toxoplasmosis from any small wild animal and several others.
There are sick people who intentionally kill animals and there are cars and trucks. I watched a neighbor's cat get killed by a car right in front of my house one afternoon. It was horrible. Another neighbor's dog was let out the door and she ran right into the street and was immediately killed by a car.
This sickens me that the dog was returned to the owners so they can let him run loose again.
I had a cat who thought he was by boyfriend. He is/was a gray tabby with a LOT of white on his face and underneath and front legs. He got out a broken window in July in Lindenhurst, NY and I've been upset about it ever since. He is chipped also but they wanted an additional $25 which I did not have at the time to put an all points so to speak in vets offices within 25 miles. Speaking of bad people. These companies take advantage of owners at the worst times. His name was/is Ghost. He used to put one paw on one side of my neck and the other on the other side then burry his mouth in my cheak and press so hard I could feel his teeth and PURR so loudly. He went in the car with me since he was a baby and I truly miss him. I sure wish I'd have a remarkable story like this one about Charlie.
Hi Carolyn,
I wish you luck in finding your friend- If you put up pictures in all of the "pet" stores in your area- anyone that seen her will contact you. Plus, If someone took her in for the winter they must buy pet food- keep putting up pictures, I'm sure you'll hear something this way. I hope we hear from you in the future with you story!!!
