Tibetan Terrier dog pictureCredit: Chris Halvorson, DogAds

The Westminster Kennel Club 134th Annual Dog Show (Feb. 15–16) is like Oscar night for dogs... so let's meet the stars! Paw Nation spoke with some of the Westminster show dog's owners to give you a sneak peek at the adorable contestants you'll see prancing around the ring on the big day.

Dog Breed: Tibetan Terrier

Group: Non-Sporting

Dog's Full Registered Name: Ch. Ri Lee's Diamonds Are Forever

Nickname: Sydney

Dog's Age: 4

Owners' Names: Brenda Algar and Nikkie Kinziger

Hometown: New Castle, Del.

I heard Sydney was mauled by a wild animal and almost died?
It's true, on Dec. 15, 2007, three days after her second birthday, Sydney was badly mauled in a near-fatal attack by a bobcat in the fenced yard at our home in Maine. She underwent two emergency surgeries to save her life and repair her front left leg.

Tell me about Sydney's personality.
She knows that she's a princess, but she's not a spoiled princess. She's like Grace Kelly: graceful, sweet and dignified. She carries herself well and she knows who she is. Sydney is unlike any other Tibetan I've had.

What is her biggest quirk?
She chases her tail. I don't have another dog that does this and I have seven. And she'll catch it, hold onto it and then chase it the other way.

What is her best trick?
She doesn't really do tricks -- Tibetens aren't trick-type dogs -- but the thing she does do that is like a trick is when we're showing and she stops, looks right at the judge and wags her tail a little.

What's Sydney's favorite treat?
Hot dogs. She shows the best with a microwaved hot dog. She also loves whipped cream.

It is amazing that Sydney was able to compete again at all.
Sydney's great spirit, will and undeniable heart are what make her not only a great show dog, but a true miracle! Against all odds, she returned to the Specials show ring in September 2008, finishing the year in the Top Twenty after competing in only nine shows and winning a group along the way. In 2009, Syd was the winner of multiple groups and group placements and finished the year as the number two Tibetan terrier bitch and number five Tibetan terrier overall in the country, earning an invitation to Westminster.

How do you and Sydney prepare for Westminster?
Going to the Garden is so much work, especially as an owner/breeder/handler like I am. We go to handling classes to make sure we're in sync and we do other shows. I bathe her out every five days without fail, and it takes three and a half hours to groom her for the show. She exercises and is on an all-natural-food diet. I also make sure she has enough play time and on-her-own time.

Anything else you'd like to share?
I love going to the Garden and am honored to have another dog going this year. Everyone thought Sydney was going to die. Then when she didn't, they thought she would lose her leg. Then when she didn't, they thought she'd have a limp. But none of that happened. With all she's been through, she has so much guts and tenacity, and she's also graceful. It's an unbelievable honor.

I cannot believe this woman allows her dog to eat whipped cream! That is a big no no! Dogs are unable to digest milk products like humans...poor little thing probably walks around with a stomach ache every time her owner allows her to do that. LEARN some new stuff and stop using your dog just for show...they are not humans and should never eat people food. Especially a pure bred dog whose digestive systems can be very particular and overly sensitive to ingredients in human food. SHAME ON YOU LADY!

Well, I have two purebred dogs that eat everything (including whipped cream EVERY DAY as a treat) and they are the healthiest dogs on the planet. Most human food is OK, and most dogs can handle it and enjoy the variety. My dogs are fit too, they are not fat from eating human food as treats. Would you like to eat the same thing every day? Whipped cream contains the smallest amount of milk product, most of the product is air. My dogs also eat cheese, and yogurt is VERY healthy for your dog. My vet even recommends daily yogurt in their food. I pretty much give them a little of whatever I'm eating, cutting back a little on their food, and making sure they get their hour of exercise per day. Even my cats drink milk on a daily basis with no sickness, I've been giving milk to my cats for the past 30 years of cat ownership, they were never sick from it and lived to ripe old ages. I think certain vets go to extremes telling owners they CAN NOT give any human food to their pets, what did people do before packaged dog food (which came out in the 1950s)? Their pets ate HUMAN FOOD!!

With all due respect, saying that dog's can not digest milk, is like saying that human's can not eat meat. It's a generalization and the data behind it is generally untrue. Many of the things we beleive about Pet Food is based on information put out by the dog food companies in the 50s and 60s. Canine Nutrition has come so far since then that I would encourage people to look closer. Many dogs CAN process dairy products; it is only the occaisonal animal that is lactose intolerant or allergic. That being said, whipped cream is not a good choice for a snack - it is too high in milk fat and sugar, which puts your pup at risk for pancreatitis. A better choice is plain low fat yogurt. I'm 63 years old and have been around dogs and raised dogs all my life. I have yet to see any one of the breeds mixed or purebred who did not like milk products and digested them well in addition to LOVING the sweetness of milk and cream! My dogs also get one raw egg each week which is good for their eyes and coats. I prefer to believe in the tried and true not what someone who has a vested interest in selling a certain type of food recommends. Oh, and before I forget: My dogs have always gotten our leftovers including pork and bones, onions, and seedless grapes and popcorn - they have all lived to ripe old ages!

Hannah#9 Hannah2-15-2010 @ 11:41AM

Any vet or "certified dog nutritionist" (LMAO) that says it's OK to feed dogs human food is not worth their weight in salt. You are WRONG. Dogs have suffered from eating human food...cooked meats, cheese, and fruits and vegetables prepared for humans is simply NOT suitable for canine consumption. With the variety of dog foods and treats on the market today, there is NO EXCUSE for feeding a dog human food in any way, shape or form. I have raised champion breed dogs before and I do know how delicate they are. But go ahead and shorten your dogs life, give the dog digestive problems, or even kill the dog because you insist on treating them like people. This is NOT 1950...it is 2010 and dogs are still dogs. And those dogs that are fed properly over their life time are healither, happier, and live longer.

I think I remember that certain company of dog food that killed a large number of pets. Dry and can dog food are loaded with crap and vitamins, ha ha. Remember the life expectancy of a dog is around 12 to 15 years soooo the food companies don't care what they put in their products. You're very misinformed!!!! Dogs can eat raw meat even with uncooked chicken bones, as for the whipped cream, I give my dog raw baby carrots or cut up apples and leave the salt and fat for the millions of overweight AMERICANS!

hannah get a grip. dogs (and cats) were not designed to consume kibble. they were designed to eat FOOD. but they maybe you are one who consumes pop tarts and kraft mac and cheese????????

Such an informative story--and very sweet. Buddies for life, obviously! I love reading about dogs with odd eating habits since I'm owned by a Daschund who runs my life. This kid watches me floss after dinner then HAS to go next. Loves it, loves it,loves it, and I'm very careful not to cut his gums with it. Most importantly? It ABSOLUTELY MUST be cinnamon-flavored or "No good!" Would love to see this Sydney eat the whipped cream--talk about having to bathe her every 5 days! Non-dairy whipped cream won't hurt their digestive systems!

jaime#13 jaime2-15-2010 @ 12:36PM

My pitbull who is now 12 has eaten everything that i have ever eaten. Im a vegetarian but hes still gotten meat, ice cream, potatoes...anything he wants. God i love him.

For Hannah--Everyone has their own opinion...I have mine. I owned 3 Maltese kids for many years and all lived long, happy lives while sharing bits of salad "accidently dropped" on the floor--their favorite was carrots. My long-time buddy, an Irish Setter would go for a run with me every day and stop at a tomato growing field and eat the ripest one she could find, then climb our 4' chain-link fence, take a nice long drink and take a nap. She lived to be 17. She would also eat a bowl of salad my dad would make for her whenever he was over and ate that-red onions included- before her dog food. My Great Aunt's "Belgian" Sheppard Randy had a chocolate chip cookie every night of his life and lived to be 15, but his hips went. He was a very active kid too, so as I wrote, we can all have our opinions....

Well all you dog folks keep on rockin with your bad selves. I am NOT misinformed, I do not post on topics that I have no knowledge of. At some point when one of you seriously injures or kills your dog I expect loads of apologies. I am right on this one folks....feed 'em human food at your own risk, and more importantly at your dogs risk! Just because it hasn't happened to you YET does not mean it's not going to. Keep it up and I can pretty much guarantee at some point your dog is going to become ill or worse. EDUCATE YOURSELVES people! Don't be sheep being led by people who think dogs are people too. PEOPLE FOOD IS NOT FORMULATED FOR A DOG! DOG FOOD IS FORMULATED FOR DOGS. Get it? Got it?? Good. Rock on.

Do people forget that dogs were wild animals once, that hunted their food, how do you think dogs have always had humans feeding them

jaguignon#17 jaguignon2-15-2010 @ 1:24PM

As far as I know, there are just 2 things that you never give a dog or a cat for that matter, that is Tylenol or chocolate.

Merry#18 Merry2-15-2010 @ 4:53PM

also very bad....grapes and raisens

MACY#19 MACY2-15-2010 @ 2:47PM

HANNAH, you are the one that is not informed, you need to read up on pet food companies. They don't care about our pets, they are in it for only the $$$. Do a little reading about what is in the food and how it is made, you just might start cooking for your loved ones. Read the book "Food Pet Die For" and you will change you tune!

I have no need whatsoever to "get a grip." Just reading the post that says the only two things you shouldn't give a dog are "chocolate and tylenol" proves my point while making me cringe. Grapes, rasins and onions are among many food products that science has concluded should never be fed to dogs. People are uneducated and uninformed about what dogs should and should not eat. I eat a very balanced diet of organic meats, fruits and vegetables. And NO my dog does not get one bite of human food. She also eats organic dog food which I highly recommend. I've seen it both ways, and the healthiest dog I've ever seen is my dog who eats specially formulated DOG FOOD...because she is a DOG.

But you ARE abusing your dog by feeding it food prepared for humans. THEY ARE NOT PEOPLE. I don't know how many times I have to say that for it to sink into some of these thick skulls! THEY ARE NOT PEOPLE AND SHOULD NOT EAT HUMAN FOODS!
