No one does "cute" quite like the Japanese. You'd think the ad wizards here in the States would have the presence of mind to slap a necktie and a pair of specs on a cat. I guess if you spend too much time outside the box, you get scooped on an obvious, classic idea like this. Instead, we Yanks get stuck with a talking garden gnome for years and years.

YouTube user sunovia5 helpfully provides a rough translation of the commercial's voiceover dialogue: "'I'm Niyaran. Today big profits are a hard task. (while looking at computer) It's grown! (profits are up!).' Tagline: 'Profitable: Hotel Yakumo.'" So we guess it's a commercial for a hotel that caters to business travelers? Who cares; the silly cat is wearing glasses and taking a plane ride! Cuuuuuuuute!

The talking gnome comes from a French movie called Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain ("The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain"). In part of the movie, according to Wikipedia, the main character Amelie "persuades her father to follow his dream of touring the world by stealing his garden gnome and having an air-hostess friend send pictures of it from all over the world."

Apparently, us Yanks can't even think of our own methods of advertising. We have to borrow from the French.

Brit -- A plaster, ugly and inane gnome doing an advertising stint is, if not at the top of the moronic scale of advertising, certainly a close second place.
Perhaps behind the inept and ridiculous cartoon characters and all the faults that they expose in human "reasoning".
Animals dressed in human clothing are not funny, nor are they anythiing to show off with loud brassy music and words.
BTW, I refuse to use, and/or purchase anything that insults one's intellect in such an inadequate and dull witted manner. Thus I save a great deal of money by refusing to spend it on 99% of TV advertising. I consider my stand as having taste and breeding. Come join me.

Cute video!

The translation is incorrect. The correct translation goes like this:

"Today I have a business Trip. I can sell it!. Reserve hotels for business trips too!"

Also, the cat isn't riding a plane, he's riding the Shinkansen or the bullet train.

Hope this helps

I don't think that's cute. Stop for a moment and look at the cat's face. He looks miserable, trying to see with those specs on his face. When will people stop thinking of animals as animated toys?

HAHA..

There's always a smile on my face after seeing this CM on TV.

So cute.

My cat's cuter than that without the tie and glasses. There are better cuter cat vidoes on youtube. The best cat video is a cat that tries to play the piano. He actually looks like he's trying to make music. Not only cute but smart. Don't see the big deal over this one.
