Today, the American Kennel Club their 2009 registration statistics revealing the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the country. What's the secret to being popular? For dogs in the United States, it's all about safety.

Several of the dog breeds on the list are known for their hard work in keeping the country safe through border patrol, bomb and narcotics detection and searching for missing persons.

Put your paws together for the Labrador retriever who took the title as the #1 most popular purebred in America for the 19th year in a row.

Bumping the Yorkshire terrier out of the number two spot, the bold German shepherd is now the second most popular dog in the nation for the first time in over 30 years.

"Labs have been America's top dog for nearly two decades due to their loyal and gentle nature," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "But the German Shepherd Dog has gained ground recently, quite possibly due to the increased attention they receive for their security efforts at home and abroad."

Did your pooch make the list?

Hey, what about the Westie? They too make a great pet.

Waldo#2 Waldo1-28-2010 @ 1:06PM

And what about Maltese? They're so cute...and they don't stink or shed!

Gimme a mutt anyday.

It isn't that Westies aren't wonderful dogs. It is a popularity thing. I have a Yellow Lab but have had Ridgebacks Chow Chows and mutts I loved them all. Thank you for your time and understanding. Bob

I loved my Black Lab, his father Mad Max had 9 puppies, I got Roscoe P. Cotrain. I taught him hand command incase my mouth was covered. I taught him "BACK", STAY,SPEAK,DOWN, "GO GET 'EM" ALL BY HAND COMAND. He had to be put down due to cancer as well as my mother's Poodle, Peaches and Cream. They both, I believe, absorbed the cancer (lymphoma) out of my mother. She is cancer free today! We got a Bison Frise, Daisy, she is a serious menice. We dogsit for a living as we are very close to a park and people started questioning us for having different animals all the time! Our calendar is full now and a sign hangs in the entry window "ALL GRANDDOGS SPOILED ROTTEN HERE"

I agree totally...I have had several Westies and other breeds in my life and I can easily say that Westies are the most fun, smart, personality plus dogs on the planet! My current Westie, Alex, is so smart it is crazy...he knows all the commercials on TV when the music starts and goes to find me to come watch it with him (the ones with dogs, cats or anything 4 legged.) He knows how to roll down his window in the car (several buttons- he always steps on the right one). He has an unbelievable vocabulary and loves agility training. I could go on but you get the idea.

Most dogs are wonderful! We have had goldne retrievers, Irish setter (crazy dogs!), we now have our second Gordon Setter. My daughter has a chihuahua and my other daughter has a Chocolate Lab, my son has a mutt (ridgeback, hound, pit mix)...they are all great dogs in their own way...and they all have adorable qualities!

Or miniature schnautzers? I have owned three and loved every minute of it. They are smart, snugglie, and will deter people at the front door with their barking. Can't ask for more... :)

Barbara,

I sympathies with you. My Black Lab. Obie, (Obsidian) blew out both of his Cruciate's and it broke my heart to have to put him down. His replacements are two German Shepherds and after a year they are coming along just fine.

Doug#10 Doug1-31-2010 @ 3:11PM

Your right. Westie are great dogs.

Lorna#11 Lorna1-28-2010 @ 9:58AM

Yes indeed, seaandsun!! Westies are the bestie! We have THREE, and have taken numerous senior rescues. I wouldn't be without a Westie at any time. Labs - ugh!! Shedding hair and slobber.

Alex#12 Alex1-28-2010 @ 1:17PM

Get a real dog. Labs are not little fluff balls like a Westie.

anna buesing#13 anna buesing2-04-2010 @ 4:12PM

Labs do not slobber!!

Bri#14 Bri1-28-2010 @ 9:21PM

I'll bet you've never even owned a Lab in your whole life, and judging by your comment, I would say you wouldn't even know what a Lab is. It's disgusting how people like you have to put down other wonderful dog breeds to make your dog seem more appealing. Obviously Labs are better- I didn't see a Westie on that list, did you? I didn't think so.

"Alex" is entitled to his/her opinion just like everyone else! A lot of large breed dog owners/lovers feel the same way. I have German Shepherds. My Shepherds can do a lot more than any of the small breeds. (that's not the only reason i love them.)
I won't have a Scottie. They're very prone to unprovoked bites.

ZEKE#16 ZEKE1-28-2010 @ 9:58AM

I have had many breeds of dogs, but the King Charles Cavaliers to me stand out the most. These dogs are incredibly loving and caring animals. They are truly an experience of a lifetime.

maytag#17 maytag1-28-2010 @ 10:28AM

My wife and I agree with you Zeke. We have had a number of different breeds through the years but never one as great as the Cavalier. They are the most loving and friendly dogs we have ever seen. They have the sweetest disposition and are very smart. Easy to train and are good around small children. Our Libby is 8 now and we have enjoyed every moment we have had with her

joeomar#18 joeomar1-28-2010 @ 11:37AM

I think the problem pit bulls didn't make the list is simply that there IS no AKC recognized dog breed called "pit bull". American Staffordshire may be the closest, but Amstaff fans do not generally call their dogs "pit bulls". In any event it is extremely unlikely that pit bull owners register their dogs with the AKC as Amstaffs, and they CAN'T be registered as pit bulls. This article is about which breeds had the most registrations with the AKC (it's just about the numbers, not an "opinion poll"), so pit bulls couldn't show up. Personally, the pit bulls I've met have been among the sweetest and most loving dogs I've known.

Lana#19 Lana1-28-2010 @ 3:15PM

Zeke, everytime I see a list naming the most popular dogs, I am always suprised that the Cavalier is not even listed! My Cavalier Nellie, is the sweetest, most loving dog imaginable and everyone else I have spoken to who has one says the same thing about their Cavalier. Their happy go lucky disposition rubs off on all who meets them!

teri#20 teri1-30-2010 @ 9:43PM

I have had a golden,a boxer, an irish setter, a mutt, a cairn, None of them stack up to my dear little Cavalier King Charles spaniel when it comes to companionship, love and just plain sweetness. I will forever have CKCS in my life.
